I have just heard that Rio Bravo has officially closed. My overriding thought is, thank god. First, as my previous review stated, this place was worst of breed, and therefore in response to Stuart and others, there is nothing sad or even remotely melancholy about the closure of such a place. When a bad restaurant closes it is a win/win for everybody. Secondly, a word about the food. Imagine warming up bad cheddar cheese inside flour tortillas, bathing it in an insipid vinegar bath they kept calling "salsa" and presenting it as cheese enchiladas. Imagine the worst, drunken college 3 AM nachos you ever had in your life...these were worse. Finally, the beef they used in tacos was NASTY plain and simple. Taco Bell is literally a better and sadly, more authentic experience. Ballpark nachos with warmed-up fake, liquid at room temperature plastic cheese are a reliably more comforting and nurturing experience than those made formerly at Rio Bravo. So why did anyone ever go there? Good question. I actually know someone well who used to eat there and kept trying to get me to go. whenever I agreed, the food was just as bad or worse than the previous time. I concluded that certain people have no taste buds, and literally don't know good from bad. (Her previous favorite was another culinary disaster, the old Villa Del Sol downtown.) So it is with a light heart and happy memories (of other, much better restaurants) that I bid 'Adios' to Rio Bravo, which shall remain for all the rest of human history, an unwatchable bad movie starring Renaissance man John Wayne from 1959.

Very sad to share that Westport location is a Covid casualty. Rio Bravo is very solid in all respects. Guacamole is prepared table side to order and is 5 stars. Very generous portion. They offer all the normal Mexican dishes and in the half dozen times we have been there, everything has been good to very good. They also have a dish called Camerone 1800, which is a generous portion of shrimp in a mushroom cream sauce made with tequila. It's excellent. Margaritas are pretty good too. Service is efficient, even when crowded.

Rio Bravo was good prior to this Covid Pandemic however during this whole situation they have been incredible! I have ordered twice from them throughout this pandemic, once on a regular night and once during cinco de Mayo. Let me tell you they were fantastic. Triple checked our order to make sure we had everything, took our credit card info over the phone and only charged us once we had received our food, very polite, huge portions and fresh yummy food. While I had a positive experience I'm sure later in the evening during cinco de Mayo they were swamped, please be mindful of these extremely crazy times when reading and writing reviews. They can't have full staff, must take extra precautions for safety reasons, and were trying to do all of this during a busy holiday for them... in my book they did awesome! I will be back to Rio bravo!!
