Being from Taiwan myself, this is a nostalgic food for me. Been here 3 times, first was couple years ago during pandemic, sadly their quality seemed to have gone downhill, just doesn't taste quite the same. Taste 0.5/1* As mentioned above, quality seem to have gone downhill, backed by lack of customers now Value 0.5/1* Even on special, $10 for a piece of chicken breast is a bit high, not to mention regular price Service 1/1* Fast and friendly Cleanliness 1/1* No complaints Overall/Revisit 0.5/1* Would revisit when feeling homesick Paying for ambience? A big slab of deep fried chicken you say? I'm in. Bring out your rulers, folks. Hot Star Large Fried Chicken is known for their extra large chicken cutlets which are promised to be over 30cm. An established brand in Taiwan with beginnings at Taipei's Shi-Lin night market, they have grown to have shops in globally with two in the Vancouver area. The Original Large Fried Chicken is the star of the show. However, their menu also includes other goodies like popcorn chicken, bone-in fried chicken, and wings. With a variety of seasonings available like pepper salt, seaweed, plum, as well as saucy flavours like Korean, and even a hot cheese fried chicken, there are a ton of excellent options to choose from. On this trip, I went for the OG. The Original Large Fried Chicken with pepper salt. It was near perfection. Big. Juicy. An seasoned so well with their delicious pepper salt. Seriously. It was so good. I thought I would just jump in the car and head to my next destination before eating it, but after the first bite I couldn't help myself. If I was to change anything, I would only ask that the seasoning be put on both sides. I'm not even suggesting the necessity for more seasoning. The amount is great. I just found that eating it seasoning side up vs down changed the eating experience and I really love pepper salt. So a little on both sides would ensure every bite has some on it. I also happened to try the really pretty and tasty Green Apple Yogurt drink which was a very nice compliment to the fried chicken. It was both sweet and tart with a touch of milkiness. I appreciated the size of the drink vs some other establishments. Service was great. Seating is available and the shop was surprisingly empty for lunch time on a Monday. Since everything is made fresh, you'll be waiting a bit for your food. However, it wasn't excessive and the wait is well worth it for the quality of the food. Overall, it's a good time and your mouth is going to be happy.
