My new favorite place. Bar snacks and tall draft 95 hk. I had the sliders. Can be difficult to find but that's the secret!

From afar, Ted's Lookout seems to be a fine place to celebrate with friends, shelter from the rain or have a soothing al fresco Smirnoff Ice. However, all is not what it seems. Supping on our refreshing tonics outside (admittedly purchased from a local outlet in the community and not the aforementioned focus of this review), we were brusquely told to move elsewhere by the manager (let's call him Ted), presumably as he did want his bar associated with the kind of recreational activities you would normally associate with, well, bars. Luckily, many of our friends are well acquainted with afternoons whiled away in dimly-lit alleyways, some even making careers out of it, so this did not cause much umbrage, and certainly not enough to put us off entering the bar. Still, it would have been nice to be able to whet our appetites and stage amiable pun wars in a place free from stench and rodent warfare. Moving in to the bar itself, you lose both a sense of who you are and also complete faith in your own existence: the staff seem to attend to absolutely everything apart from your needs. This would be easier to forgive were those needs (copious amounts of stagger juice) not so predictable and, frankly, aligned so closely with the very purpose of our trusty establishment. Apathy abounds. The chefs seem to be cooking for nobody in particular (a relief if you have had the misfortune of its stink burning your nostrils, throat and entrails) and I am pretty certain I saw a barman painting what appeared to be the toenails of his pet cockroach to avoid serving a customer. He was gnawing what looked to be a door wedge, though it could have been the chicken burger.Ted must spend so much time worrying about his clients' pre-drinking routines that he has no time to clean the pipes. The beer smells like horse and tastes like putrid flatulence. One doesn't so much enjoy one's time in this place so much as fester, longingly wishing an errant meteor might put one out of one's misery. It would certainly improve the décor and, in truth, the ambience. When you enter the toilet from the bar, it is unclear which location feels more like a toilet. The overriding smell everywhere led me to believe I was not the first to be unclear of this distinction. The emaciated staff (presumably offered, somewhat optimistically, free meals from the kitchen) drink away their troubles brazenly behind the bar, though the more time you spend here the more sympathy you develop for them. I actually popped out to Caltex at one point to buy them some more petrol to sniff. They ring the bell at regular intervals, though it is not clear why. I wondered if they were herding cattle upstairs (this may explain the smell), or perhaps that we might mistake it for the somewhat pre-emptive call for last orders. As we were their only customers, this seems odd unless they had plans later that day to bathe in more manure. We lowered ourselves greatly when we went in to the bar (though in fact still not low enough to reach the sink outside the bathroom), and I am worried we may never recover. I have since developed a rash on my eyebrows. All in all I have given Ted's Lookout three stars as the bar staff were so drunk they didn't charge me for many of my drinks (including ones laid out on the bar with such theatre you would have thought them hard to forget), and also they didn't notice when I paid them in Italian lira. Also, it might not have been as bad as I've made out to be.
