(Overall: A) Tomino Taberna Gallega is a lively Michelin Guide Spanish restaurant located in the heart of Little Italy with a variety of interesting options. I recently visited as apart of a large group and tried a good portion of their menu! Overall, I was happy with the large variety of food available at Tomino. The ambience was very lively and they have a large dining area with friendly and attentive servers that are quite sharp. The food is of good quality overall with quite a few interesting menu items. My only complaint is that their bathrooms are limited, but besides that highly recommend this place! (Barcelona Vermout: B) - My cocktail of choice was on the stronger side, though I found it to be surprisingly medicinal and quite pleasant amongst cocktails in this vein. I think what would elevate this drink a bit to match would be some interesting presentational plays. (Jamon Iberico: B) - When going to a Spanish restaurant, of course we got to try the ham. Their aged ham is deep in flavor and I think tastes much better when paired with the free bread and evoo rather than just eating it salty and plain. I think this dish does have some room to improve by explicitly pairing it with something and also leveraging some presentational aspects. (Pulpo A Fiera: B) - Octopus is another staple in Spanish cuisine. Their octopus was incredibly tender and nicely seasoned -- highly recommend. Similar to veins as above, this dish would be a showstopper with some effort in the presentation category. (Zaburinas: A+): We got half a dozen scallops grilled on the half shell and topped with Chimichurri. These scallops were tender, elegant, and delicious. Highly recommend to all. (Pan Con Tomate: B) - This classic tomato on bread dish looked elegant and was well flavored as well. Unfortunately, the bread was falling apart a bit too readily in my opinion. (Chorizos Al Infierno: B) - The translation for this comes very close to flaming sausage, which is exactly what it is. I felt that the flame looked interesting, but did not add much beyond the fact that this dish is just five sausages. (Pimientos Estilo Padron: C) - Classic blistered shishitos tossed with a bit of flake salt. This is always a classic I see at Spanish places but I feel like it's missing some opportunity to do something more interesting with them flavor or presentation wise. (Tomate Higos y Ventresca: C) - This is a tomato salad topped with cooked tuna. I found the cooked tuna to be rather unpleasant to eat as it is firm, and it also didn't pair well with the tomato salad, which tasted nice. I felt like this dish would taste better with the tuna omitted, raw, or shaved, but not in cooked chunks. The presentation looks good though. (Chocolate Orujo Y Cafe: C) - This was a very creamy dish, but as with most chocolate mousse, I feel like the dish is missing some substance as it was mostly just air. It was served with cake, but I guess not enough to fill the air? (Chuleton De Vaca Vieja: B) - Their prized tomahawk steak which is cooked masterfully to a medium rare and seasoned well with flake salt and pairs beautifully with that chili sauce to give some substantial flavor. The best part, in my opinion, was the bone, which had the fattiness and all the residual flavor. The fries, however, seemed a bit of an after thought (look at the lonely fry that got dropped on the steak) and could have benefitted by tossing it in some fragrant herbs like parsley, shallots, garlic, truffle oil, etc. (Arroz Caldoso Con Bogavante: B) - This is not a paella, but a much more liquified version almost like a Chinese congee, which is a lobster rice porridge soup almost. The lobster is reasonably tender and the stock develops some intense and pleasant flavors. I think the presentation could be a bit improved, but otherwise solid dish. (Costillas De Codero: A) - Their lamb was by far my favorite dish; the meat was incredibly tender and succulent and paired extremely well with that creamy and sweet roasted chestnut puree that had me going by the spoonfuls. If the presentation was improved by giving the lamb some height and then being a bit more intentional with the different sauces, this dish would definitely be a home run. (Torrija De Bica: A) - I really enjoyed the concept of the brulee on top of a soft sponge cake to give it that caramelized sweetness and also a sharp and crispy texture. Highly recommend this dessert. -- Food: +1 Presentation: E Price: E Atmosphere: E Service: +2 Menu: +1 Overall: +4 A Insta/Beli: @amei_eats
