After hearing about flat croissants and seeing it all over my feed, I added this to my list of places to try. Last weekend, I made a reso for their afternoon tea for 2. Recently I've been on a French bakery kick to try the best croissants and chocolate croissants in the Bay Area. Despite the horrible weather conditions, I still managed to make the drive down to Mountain View from the East Bay. They understood and graciously saved my table until I arrived after making two calls to ensure that I was still coming. Upon arrival, it was a packed house in spite of the raining weather. The staff were efficient took and made orders accordingly. As soon as I entered, the bakery reminded me of a place I frequent in HK for afternoon tea. Their beautifully presented cakes, chocolates, and pastries were so inviting that it made me want to try everything..but I saved it until our afternoon tea was done. My DD ordered Paris For Two (highly recommend this) vs my Mango Black to share. Our tower of pastries, cakes, and tea sandwiches arrived no too long after. Loved how the staff explained everything in detail. After taking pics, we delved right in as we skipped breakfast. Also, our drive took over 90 min vs the 50 min we were initially quoted. Needless to say we were hungry. We started at the bottom tea sandwiches. Egg salad with truffle oil (didn't taste much egg as it was overpowered by the truffle oil and the bread tasted a bit dry and stale), smoked turkey and cheese (very flavorful, my fav in the savory section), crab cake with crust less bread (a bit soggy, bread was actually wet). Next were the scones. My DD loves scones. Me? I am never pleased with them as they're hard to nail. DD loved how soft and flakey they were. I felt that it lacked flavor. When we spread apricot and strawberry preserves on top, it made it better. The cakes, macarones, chocolate. This is usually my favorite. I started with the muffin/ mini cupcake. There was a sliver of almond on top of the white ..cream? But I couldn't tell you what flavor it was supposed to be. Evrry bite tasted just...sweet. Macaroons. There was a raspberry and a pistachio. Again, I could really taste the raspberry flavor even after rinsing my palette with water and tea. The pistachio just tasted like almond paste center. The lemon, coconut cake was tastey. Finally something that had layers of flavor I could decipher. The raspberry chocolate cake was also decent. The chocolate was good. By that time of the meal my whole mouth was sugared out that I went back to pick at the last egg salad sandwich to balance it out. Overall, it wasn't my favorite afternoon tea experience. The cakes were hit or miss. However, I was hoping that their signature pastries that I picked up to go would save my experience at Alexander's. When I got home, I immediately took bites of the flat strawberry croissant, a plain croissant and the chocolate, as I really want to see what the hype was about. People commented about it tasting like a palmier cookie, which I am quite familiar with having just had many recently. Also, working for a bakery that specialized in palmier cookies, I'd know. To my disappointment, the taste of the / flat / croissant was just that...flat. It wasn't butter. There was really no depth to the flavors. The strawberry dipped chocolate and dried strawberries was nice touch. But that's about it. Perhaps other flavors would have been better? Onto the the plain croissant and pain au chocolat. Note: I have recently had both at my favorite French bakery so I really wanted these two to be pastries that saves my experience at Alexander's. Ugh. It didn't. The croissants weren't flakes at all. No buttery flavor..it almost needed a pinch of salt. The texture inside was almost "bready" and it seemed like the top wasn't brushed to give it that glow that adds the crispiness with each bite. Sigh. I had high hopes for this bakery and really wanted to love this place. Unfortunately, I didn't. The Paris For Two, the smoked Turkey, and Lemon Coconut cake, and the Raspberry Chocolate cakes in the tier were the things I DID like. If I am in the area again, I would mind trying their match tiramisu and mango cheesecake. They did look really good.

Alexander's Patisserie in downtown Mountain View is a beautiful spot to relax and catch up on work, with coffee and pastries that are undeniably gorgeous. The craftsmanship is top-notch, and each sweet is a feast for the eyes. However, my overall experience landed at a solid 3 stars. Let's break it down: The Ambiance: Great for chilling. This is a lovely spot to unwind, grab a coffee, and maybe do some work on your laptop. The Pastries: A double-edged sword. Visually stunning, these pastries are like tiny works of art. However, they tend to be on the richer and denser side, which might not be for everyone. While the overall quality is there, the taste itself was just okay. They are also quite expensive, which makes the value proposition a bit questionable. Flavors: Interesting, but imbalanced. I tried the Earl Grey, a chocolate mousse with an orange center. The concept was intriguing, but the orange flavor was muted and didn't quite complement the chocolate as well as I'd hoped. The passion fruit and chai chocolates were decent, but again, nothing that stood out. The Verdict: Alexander's Patisserie is a great place to grab a coffee and enjoy a beautiful, Instagram-worthy pastry. However, if you're looking for the most flavorful or budget-friendly option, you might want to explore elsewhere. Service: Take out Price per person: $20–30 Food: 3 Service: 4 Atmosphere: 4
