Did someone say perfect happy hour portions and prices? This is the spot! I came here with my mom at 3:30 on a rainy day and this Pho is pretty much what the doctor prescribed. We started with fried spring rolls and kept the ball rolling with the veggie pho with tofu and my mom got the chicken pho. Everything was so tasty and even though there were only a couple servers, the food wasn't delayed much.

My friends and I came to Anchoi right before 6 PM on a Saturday night and were thankfully able to make it for Happy Hour. Even though we arrived right at peak dinner hour the restaurant was fairly empty and our group of three was able to be seated as soon as we entered the restaurant. I decided to order the happy hour special banh mi and pho combo. For just 10 dollars it was a surprisingly filling meal. I got the lemongrass pork banh mi and the flavor was wonderful. The pho was also good, not really the best but definitely hit a noodle soup craving I had. Service was also good and efficient. All in all, a solid restaurant especially during happy hour.

On a chilly Tuesday late morning, I decided to give it a try. I've only tried the beef stew (bo kho) with pho rice noodles. At least my bowl this particular day was pretty delicious. I've had my fair share of 'hu tieu bo kho' over the years and the rendition here was nicely done. Gorgeous annatto seed red, with a hint of curry and ample noodles along with a fair amount of soft beef shanks that were fairly high quality. I can't say that for the other Viet joint in DT Portland when I tried their rendition. My wish would be a lot more bean sprouts and basil leaves as part of the condiments, but upon request they kindly obliged. For a location right near PSU, the space is quite large. Maybe the floorplan already existed but they were quite smart with their layout having mainly 2-seaters that could easily be combined. The bar area also has plenty of seats. Price wise a fair $13 for being in downtown although for that price I'm used to a "large" portion whereas here was a generous "medium" that still filled my appetite. As noted in other food reviews I'm a bit sensitive to MSG. There is almost always some MSG in Vietnamese cuisine which is totally normal, but they didn't seem to add an exorbitant amount or I would have felt it. I'll be back to try other dishes but I've found a nice place for Vietnamese beef stew noodles in DT Portland.
