This used to be an excellent place where we ate regularly. Big John the cook worked fast and Jan, the manager, was brisk and efficient, so the place operated very well and was one of our favourites. I visited during the Notting Hill carnival but was refused food as they were only doing coffee during the bank holiday weekend. This was understandable, though other cafes served food and did a roaring trade. We went in recently and had to wait around ten minutes for a flat white coffee – I was the only person ordering, so the slow wait was notable and, in my view, inexcusable, as Bluebelles advertises itself as a coffee shop. The food we ordered took a very long time coming. There were two chefs present, though neither of them seemed occupied or hurrying to do anything but chat. When I asked about the hold up, I was informed that this was not a fast-food place and everything was cooked to order. That is the case of most places where I order breakfast, from Claridges to Daisy Green in Holland Park and Paddington. All of them serve food promptly and efficiently. When our food arrived the Hollandaise sauce was cold, as if it had come from a fridge and had not been made to order. Customers coming for breakfast need to be served promptly, as many of them have to go to work. Meal type: Breakfast Price per person: £10–20 Food: 3 Service: 2 Atmosphere: 2

I had a really disappointing experience at Bluebelles of Portobello. My colleagues and I waited an unreasonably long time for simple lunch orders (chicken wraps and a cheese toastie), only to see a table who arrived and ordered after us receive their food first. I also ordered an iced flat white but was given a regular flat white with no apology. When I asked for the correct drink, the barista clearly wasn’t keen to make it and instead served a hot flat white in a mug with a few ice cubes thrown in. It was BIZARRE, poorly made and the mug was slammed down on the table without a word, almost spilling. When I raised the issue with our waitress, the only response I got was “we are short staffed” with no apology. Even asking for the service charge to be removed became an ordeal. At least I was not charged for the iced flat white. Some of the worst service I’ve ever experienced! I do not recommend dining-in here (maybe takeaway is a safer bet).
