The only redeeming feature in this gym is the setting. The customer service is non-existent. In fact most of the staff are rude, uninterested and look like they’d rather be somewhere else. Yes I’m a member, but it’s because they set the hardest. Go to the climbing hanger if you want a more friendlier experience

This centre does many things exceptionally well, so I want to be clear that this review is not intended to discourage people from visiting. The setting is among the best I’ve experienced in the South West, particularly at lower grades, which are technical and thoughtfully designed. The variety of holds and density of routes are outstanding—far beyond most UK gyms I’ve visited. The centre itself is clean, well-designed, and built with high-quality materials, with great social spaces. It’s obvious that a lot of investment and care went into creating it. However, it’s with some frustration that I feel compelled to raise an ongoing issue - one that many long-term members have repeatedly fed back, both directly to staff and through the QR feedback system, seemingly with little effect. From a boulderer’s perspective, the Titan wall is the most interesting feature in the centre. Its varied angles allow for creative, three-dimensional problems with a wide range of movement styles. Outside of the upstairs roof, most other walls are slab, vertical, or only moderately overhanging - so you would expect the Titan wall to play a key role in adding variety. Unfortunately, this isn’t the case. The Titan wall (and competition wall) is almost exclusively set with physically demanding, coordination-heavy, competition-style problems. Despite consistent requests from members, there’s little variation in style. This type of climbing doesn’t appeal to everyone, and the result is that - especially during busy periods - a significant portion of the centre is underused, while the rest becomes overcrowded. For those who don’t enjoy or can’t regularly engage with comp-style climbing, the remaining circuits can feel repetitive and limited, lacking the diversity of movement that the wall’s design could offer. Compared to other centres in the region, the experience can feel surprisingly one-dimensional. It’s particularly puzzling given that the “old school” competition previously held on the Titan wall was very popular. It suggests there is clear demand for a broader range of styles, yet this doesn’t seem to be reflected in the current setting approach. At times, it feels as though alternative preferences are being overlooked. This is frustrating as a long-term member (Quay 8 years & boulder Exe since opening). I’m effectively paying £40 a month but feel like I can only fully use two-thirds of the facility - and not the most interesting third. I don’t want competition-style climbing to disappear; I enjoy it occasionally. I’m simply asking for more balance and variation so that all members can enjoy the full range of what the centre offers. I know I’m not alone in this view - many climbers, particularly those in their late twenties and older, feel similarly but may be reluctant to speak up. Perhaps a member vote or more transparent feedback process could help guide future setting decisions. I genuinely hope this is taken on board, as I’d prefer to continue supporting a centre that has so much going for it - but at the moment, I’m considering cancelling my membership.
