I live locally and recently visited Bruno on a very hot afternoon. I’m intolerant to grapes, and the lovely Asian waitress who was working that day — I believe she may have been Korean — was incredibly kind and helpful. When they didn’t have sake, she offered me some makgeolli instead, which I’d never tried before. It was delicious, and her warmth genuinely made the visit memorable. We went back tonight partly because we’d had such a nice experience the first time. Unfortunately, she wasn’t working, and the experience could not have been more different. The waitress who served us seemed irritated from the moment we sat down and gave us what felt like a dirty look. When I asked whether they had the same Korean drink I’d had previously, she simply said “no”, with no attempt to suggest an alternative. I then asked about sake and again got a curt “no”, followed by being told to look at the menu. She then rather abruptly asked whether anyone else was joining us. When we said no, she immediately pulled the tables apart in a way that made us feel as though we were an inconvenience simply for being there. The whole interaction felt unnecessarily rude and hostile, and it put a sour end to what had otherwise been a lovely day. I make a point of supporting local independent businesses, and after my first visit I genuinely wanted to come back. But tonight’s service was so unpleasant that I’m not sure I would again. I can’t know what motivated the waitress’s attitude, but it was sufficiently pointed that it left me wondering whether there was an element of prejudice or elitism involved. A real shame, particularly because my first experience there had been so lovely. Service: 1

Bruno is a great space with a fun concept, but the guest chef model means quality and value can vary significantly. My last visit felt very overpriced, with tiny portions such as a £10 lolly and £12 for half an heirloom tomato. It was a nice experience overall, but the prices took some of the enjoyment out of it. Price per person: £60–70 Food: 3 Service: 4 Atmosphere: 4

Honestly one of the best dining experiences I have had in Hackney. The venue is perfectly cosy and intimate, the staff were incredible from the moment we arrived to the moment we left, they really looked after us well and were so friendly. A small group of us visited on Sunday afternoon for lunch by resident Chef Jack Hancock which was some of the best food I have had in London. We pretty much ordered everything on the menu and everything was a hit, my personal favourites were the Gruyere Spaetzle, Garlic and Morels and the Chuckeye Steak, both were unreal. The bottle of Katla wine recommended to us was really delicious and the perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon.
