Came back to Raleigh after several years to visit friends, and we decided to give Caffé Luna a try. We’d heard it had been around forever, and the reviews were strong, so expectations were high. Unfortunately, those expectations lasted about as long as the fresh bread apparently did. I landed at 3 stars overall — average. So, let’s break it down. Atmosphere — 3 Stars The atmosphere wasn’t bad, but creativity apparently took the evening off. Lots of wood tables, uncomfortable chairs and not much else to distinguish the place. The bar area was decent, but nothing special compared with what Raleigh offers these days. Oh, and speaking of the bar: beer and wine only. No liquor. More on that shortly. Service — 3 Stars Great service can make up for shortcomings elsewhere. Unfortunately, that opportunity was missed. Our waiter was somewhat aloof and standoffish. When we asked about drinks, he informed us they only serve beer and wine with an air suggesting we had just asked if they also sold lawnmowers. Okay. Got it. The restaurant was probably 25% occupied, so this wasn’t exactly the Saturday-night rush at Grand Central Station. A little extra attention would have been nice. Then came my favorite discovery: every wine offered by the glass was from California. At an Italian restaurant. No Italian or French wines by the glass. Those are bottle only. So we have an Italian restaurant with no liquor and no Italian wine by the glass. Somewhere in Tuscany, a winemaker just felt a disturbance in the universe. Food — 3.5 Stars I’ll give the menu credit—it had a nice selection, earning the extra half-star. We had the Caprese salad, lasagna and ravioli. First came the bread. I’m not sure when it was baked, but if Caffé Luna ever needs to hang pictures, they can probably leave the hammer in the bag. The bread was that hard. The Caprese was average. The mozzarella was good, but the tomatoes didn’t seem particularly ripe or fresh—which is a problem when tomatoes have roughly half the job description of a Caprese salad. The lasagna and ravioli were both good, not great. That pretty much sums up the food: enjoyable enough, but nothing that makes you stop and say, “You have GOT to try this.” Value — 4 Stars Here’s where Caffé Luna deserves credit. We had an appetizer, two glasses of wine, a beer and two entrées for about $75. In today’s restaurant world, that’s very reasonable. At least they aren’t charging extraordinary prices for ordinary food. When I’m visiting a city, though, I’d gladly spend $150 instead of $75 for a four-star atmosphere, four-star service and four-star food. Overall — 3 Stars Caffé Luna wasn’t terrible. And sometimes that’s almost the problem. It was simply average. Raleigh has changed dramatically since we first lived here 25 years ago. The city and its restaurant scene have moved forward. Caffé Luna feels like it hasn’t moved quite as quickly. Its history and past reviews may still bring people through the door, but history only gets you so far. For $75, I didn’t feel ripped off. But next time I’m in Raleigh, I’ll spend the extra money and try somewhere else. Food: 3 Service: 3 Atmosphere: 3

Darcey and staff were amazing. super easy to work with and beyond helpful thru out the process. Would highly recommend for gatherings or parties! Also just dining in, we have never had a bad experience. Just a great place in downtown Raleigh! Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5

Basic amenities, picture look way nicer/ reality. Fancy names of dishes for very basic food. And they won't remind you that coffee is included. Food: 2 Service: 4 Atmosphere: 3 Meal type: Lunch Price per person: $30–40
