I’ve got to stop reading reviews and expecting great food! Working in Versailles today so in support of local business, thought I’d give Callie’s a try. I was excited to see a full parking lot and inside only a few empty seats. I had to wait a minute to be seated but the hostess/server was friendly and sweet. That’s the best I have to write. The daily special called to me, smoked sausage with cabbage. The sides were fruit - which I should have selected! Slaw or cheesy broccoli. Since I was already having cabbage and I like my broccoli crisp tender w only a squeeze of lemon, a spritz of hot, melted butter and a sprinkle of coarse salt - I opted instead to pay extra for a small bowl of pinto beans. It took a minute to get the meal but late lunch rush with limited staff I figured. First, the beans. I never met a bowl of beans I didn’t like until today. People a little salt goes a long way! The pintos were well cooked but not a single item had been added besides water. This restaurant is touted for its great breakfast so I’m sure there’s ample bacon grease or even some bacon ends and pieces. I won’t mention a ham bone or hock or smoked Turkey wing! . Although this place is not labeled as vegetarian or vegan, perhaps that’s the deal? If you want to keep vegan fine but salt is so important to add some flavor to beans! A hot pepper, onion, garlic something! The accompanying fried cornbread was more flour based than cornmeal. It was ok but just ok. Nothing I would want to ever eat again. Now to the special I can honestly say that I ate two bites, paid my tab and left. The cabbage had been cooked to an inch of its full gray life, again absolutely no seasoning had been added during the preparation. Even after adding salt and pepper at the table it was just inedible. The smoked sausage - was mystery meat in a sausage casing. If it was smoked sausage it’s unlike any I’ve ever seen or tasted before. Appeared more like a hot dog but did t even taste like that! I spent a total of 8 minutes once served. No one checked on me to ask why I wasn’t eating. After tax and tip, I spent $18 on nothing of substantive value. If I do ever eat there again it would be breakfast as most of the positive reviews are centered around that. Don’t know if I will by maybe. Food: 2 Service: 3 Atmosphere: 2

Callie's Homestyle restaurant is one of the best kept secrets where there's wonderful food, a great staff, and a very giving back to the community sense of togetherness!
Definitely get the country fried steak with home fried potatoes and two eggs over easy with biscuits and white cream gravy.
