Tarumi is a little suburb of kobe that has seen better days. Located on a non-descript street in this non-descript area is a hidden jewel of a restaurant run by a sweet couple who obviously love their craft. They make excellent French/ Japanese fusion food that delight the taste buds. You get the feeling that if they wanted to, they could raise the presentation quality a bit, upgrade a few fixtures or perhaps the table service assets, and become yet another crowded michelin wanna be... but somehow, that would be a sin. Where I grew up, every small town had that one restaurant that came with its own urban mythology... the chef used to be the head chef of the Waldorf, or he was the personal chef to the king of Jordan, or some such, and we would all take pride knowing that our local restaurant wasn't just good, it was special. This is that, but the real deal. The food isn't just good, it's special. The flavors are unique and powerful, but not quite avant guard. The presentation, from a food perspective, is great, but the accoutrements could be better. This is by far the best restaurant in tarumi, and certainly a contender for a place in the top restaurants in kobe. Unlike other restaurants that simply run out of chef, their Achilles heal is more of a choice.. they want to be a great neighborhood restaurant, not a famous wannabe. If you're in the kobe area and you want to try something special, give them a call and see if they can make some room for you. You won't regret it. Meal type: Dinner Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 4
