Chercher Ethiopian Restaurant & Mart was such a memorable dining experience! From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere felt warm, colorful, and full of character, with beautiful Ethiopian artwork and a cozy, welcoming energy. The food was absolutely wonderful. We ordered a platter with injera and a variety of dishes, which was the perfect way to experience so many different flavors. Every bite was rich, comforting, and beautifully seasoned, from the flavorful lentils and vegetables to the delicious stews and spreads. The injera tied everything together perfectly and made the meal feel authentic and communal. You can tell why Chercher has received Michelin recognition. It is not just the food, but the whole experience: the hospitality, the culture, and the care behind every dish. It is the kind of place where you slow down, share food, and truly enjoy the meal. We ordered the 50/50 geba weta and kurt dish and the vegetarian sampler platter that included a little bit of everything. All of the dishes were heavily spiced and extremely delicious. Our favorites were Ye'misir kike we't (lentil dish) and Mama Tej mead. The Kurt raw meat dish was very unlike anything we've ever tasted. While we appreciated how unique and powerfully spiced it was, it seemed like a bit of an acquired taste. The baklava was warm and moist; not a show-stopper but a pleasant ending to the fantastic meal. The overall vibe was low-key, non-fussy, and not at all pretentious. You can tell as soon as you step in that you've landed on a genuine hole-in-the-wall gem. The biggest area for improvement is their bathroom, which is adequate but not terribly clean, containing no art, and has holes in the walls. It would also be nice if they offered compostable take-out containers instead of plastic. Those two complaints aside, we absolutely loved our experience dining at Chercher and will make a point to come back anytime we visit DC. The vegan platter was incredibly flavorful and filling for two! Gluten free injera is an amazing touch, Chercher really can’t be beat. The atmosphere is warm and homey, this is a well-loved local spot.
