We went to the Chinese Tavern at Pinto Wharf for the first time yesterday, and probably would have never set foot in that place had we not shared the desire to eat something different to our usual fish dishes. We didn't really have any high expectations. When we sat down to a table setting with two forks, a knife and a spoon instead of chopsticks and not a single other patron in sight, those expectations weren't raised a bit. However all that faded once we were handed the colourful menu. The food looked bright, fresh and appetizing to the eye. The all wood ambiance of the dining area right up to the rest rooms depicted a clean restaurant.
EVERY single item on the menu looked good, which made it hard for us to choose! We started off with an aromatic Crispy Duck served with onions, julienne of cucumbers and plum sauce. Pancakes slowly steamed until nice and hot were placed on the side in their own steaming basket. What a gem! When you taste dishes like this, it becomes clear there is a true Chef in the kitchen. For our main course we varied the dishes….Pork in plum sauce, Squid in Black Bean sauce, and some Honey Glazed King Prawns. Notwithstanding we were eating Chinese our inclination to fish remained unaltered. We weren’t keen on the King Prawns for the simple reason the batter was too thick. However the King Prawn inside the batter casing was good. Dishes were served with the Chinese Tavern special Rice and Egg Noodles mixed with Sea Food. We really had a balance of amazing flavours.
Both of us had dessert, a beer and an espresso. Complimentary pre-lunch prawn crackers were served plus an after lunch drink. Total inclusive of a good tip came to €75:00.
Consistency, along with friendly service, is the ticket that welcomes patrons to return and we will do that eventually.
