Chuy's Tex-Mex was a pleasant surprise, although I suppose I shouldn't be shocked. My friend from Texas recommended it, and Texans treat opinions about Tex-Mex with the same seriousness most people reserve for constitutional law. I figured it was safer to trust him than risk an international incident. To be fair, he does have the highest standards in food. His one glaring weakness is his inability to appreciate bone-in chicken at Bojangles, a position so objectively incorrect that I have to factor it into every recommendation he gives. We ordered the Chicka-Chicka Boom-Boom Enchiladas and the steak burrito. Both were delicious: juicy, fresh, well-seasoned, and packed with flavor. My only complaint is that the "Boom-Boom" part of the enchiladas appears to be mostly a marketing suggestion. I've had flavored water with a more aggressive kick. The food was great, but if you're expecting a spice-induced religious experience, you'll need to bring your own hot sauce and imagination. The bean sauce and rice were excellent too, which is impressive because side dishes at most restaurants have all the passion and effort of a group project contribution submitted at 11:58 PM. The chips and salsa were great, but the jalapeño ranch was the real star. It was so good that I briefly considered skipping the entrée and just becoming a full-time ranch consumer. The only thing missing was a margarita. Unfortunately, I had work the next day and chose responsibility over happiness. A difficult decision, but somebody has to keep the economy running. Ordered the fajitas. On the plus side it is actual steak not a bunch of thin shriveled leftover strips like at some places. There are four tortillas instead of the normal three. The tortillas are full size not the normal small ones. The toppings are generous. You could easily split the single serving between two people. On the negative side, the fajitas didn’t have much flavor. I had to salt them because they were so flavorless. I am not sure about their claim about marinating the meat because it didn’t have any fajitas taste. The menu says they use beer to marinate the meat but it imparts no flavor and is basically wasted. Most of the meat was tender but I did have to use my butter knife to try and separate the pieces and some had some gristle that made it hard to bite through the meat. Didn’t really like the creamy sauce for the chips. It just tastes like ranch dressing to me. I would rather have more of the salsa but even it was rather bland. The chips are thin light and crispy. If you want some heat with the food be sure to request a bottle of tabasco when you order because there isn’t any on the tables and it took my waitress over ten minutes to find a bottle in a “Mexican” restaurant. I love the bottomless chips and the creamy jalapeño dip. The queso is fantastic, and the enchiladas were spot on. Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5
