An open thank you to the people who make a difference. This glowing review-turned-thank-you isn’t without its bias. Lynnie and Caroline have been part of my life since high school, and The Crossroads is where I learned so many of my early life lessons. But now, at 40, with a family of my own, it’s something even more important. The Crossroads is one of my safe places. It’s where I can be myself. No mask. No pretending. No editing who I am. It’s always felt like home — like time somehow hasn’t changed us. But last night, while celebrating my dad’s 75th birthday there, something hit me in a way it never had before. I looked around the room and had to hold back tears. Because David was safe there too. Most of you know Davey has autism. Restaurants are usually not safe spaces for us. There are often judgmental looks, impatient staff, and that familiar “autism mom” feeling of being watched and judged — even when he’s just quietly stimming under the table. But last night was different. David played freely. He laughed. He smiled. He ate pool cue chalk and no one charged me. No one told me to contain him. No one asked what was wrong with him. No one stared. No one made me feel like we didn’t belong. Instead, our normal simply existed there. Zurg and Buzz battled on the pool table. Jumba wandered through the restaurant and bar keeping a watchful eye. David stimmed loudly with two devices and ran joyful circles around the room. And we laughed. And now I’m crying the happiest tears. Because my safe place is his safe place too. Thank you, Crossroads, for being the kind of place that makes families like mine feel like we belong. It means more than you could ever know. Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5
