dLena does brunch differently, and it works. The setup: $45 gets you all-you-can-eat, $70 adds bottomless drinks. Instead of ordering off a menu, your server just starts cycling through the entire menu in tapas-sized portions, one after another. It sounds a little chaotic on paper but it flows well in practice, and it means you end up trying things you wouldn't have pointed at yourself. The flavors throughout were genuinely good, a cut above your standard Mexican restaurant. The mole in particular was excellent, the kind that actually tastes like it took some effort to make. Two misses: the chicken on the chicken and waffles was overcooked, and the salmon was too. Both proteins had the same problem, which makes me think there's something off in the kitchen's timing rather than just bad luck. When you're running an AYCE service where volume is the whole model, consistency on execution matters more, not less. Still, those were isolated stumbles in an otherwise solid parade of food. Absolutely loved my experience at dLeña in Washington, DC. The location is excellent, and the overall vibe is easily a 10/10. The decor is amazing—stylish, warm, and perfect for a great dinner spot. The noise level was also just right: lively enough to feel energetic, but still comfortable for enjoying dinner and conversation. I ordered a bottle of El Enemigo and the Wagyu Steak a la Piedra, and everything was excellent. The ingredients tasted fresh and high quality, and the food was prepared beautifully. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. Our waiter, Patricia, was especially great—so friendly, patient, and helpful with my order. She took the time to explain everything and made the experience even better. Highly recommend dLeña for anyone looking for great food, great service, and an excellent atmosphere in DC. From the moment I walked into dLena DC, I was treated with disrespect and complete disregard. I had a confirmed reservation, but the hostess—a middle-aged Latina woman with blonde hair—claimed she couldn’t find it and immediately chose rudeness over empathy. Rather than trying to troubleshoot the situation, she dismissed me with a nasty attitude and shunned me off to a corner as if I were the problem. She made no attempt to use basic reasoning to figure out the issue, and her behavior was both unprofessional and humiliating. This was supposed to be a celebratory evening for a friend’s birthday, and although we went on to spend over $600 on dinner, the tone had already been ruined. Her attitude became the unfortunate focal point of the night. I brought this to the attention of the manager, a man with a large afro who never even gave his name. To my disappointment, he showed no concern or interest in resolving the situation. He offered no apology, no solution, and didn’t even follow up after our conversation. It was clear he had no intention of making things right. For a place that markets itself as an upscale dining experience, the service was disgraceful. The lack of professionalism and basic courtesy was appalling. I will never return to dLena, and I would caution others to think twice before spending their money somewhere that treats guests this poorly.
