Went there for the first time and had a great quinoa salad! Great portions for the price. Very fresh!

So sad.  This place used to be great.  It was a labor of love for the husband/wife team who opened it (he had been a chef at the Fairmont).  They used top-notch ingredients, made a great rotisserie chicken, to die for freshly-fried potato chips, incredible crispy pork salad....and so so much more.   They worked hard, hard hard, and even though the place was always busy, they said it was a financial struggle...so they sold it.   New ownership kept the menu (and even added a few new items)...there was a drop off in quality (this was clearly not a team committed to shopping seasonally at farmers' markets), a small rise in prices...but overall, still a reasonable choice for lunch in this 'hood.   Fast forward to today's lunch.  My salmon special:  a small piece of overcooked  fish that tasted like it was bought at Trader Joe's a couple of months ago, accompanied by an overdressed small heap of wilted salad,  and some stale chips that ...dare I speculate...were "house made" by the Sysco supply chain...  My colleague's rotisserie chicken?  Well he is a guy who always cleans his plate...but this time, left half behind because....it tasted like it had been in the refrigerator for days and was "at the edge".   The cucumber water?  Gone, replaced with tap.  Want a small latte with an extra shot?  Add $2.50 or order the large latte for +$0.75, but when you ask for that in a small cup....you feel like Jack Nicholson in Five Easy Pieces asking for the wheat toast (and similarly unsuccessful). Sigh.

Your jaw is tired. It's sore. It's a-c-h-i-n-g. But, you can't help it - you keep going... Because it's THAT good. Yup, that's how I felt about Elmira's Crispy Pork Salad. What did you think I was talking about? ( o _ O ) It took me 5 years too long to visit Elmira Rosticceria, an Italian influenced rotisserie serving American breakfast, salads, sandwiches, and rotisserie chicken and porchetta. I'm surprised they don't have more reviews because Elmira seems to a local favorite for UC Hasting students and city workers in the area looking for a filling and wallet friendly meal (nothing is over $14). I'm glad my co-worker and I arrived before the lunch rush at 11:30 am, otherwise finding seating would have been an issue. It was packed by noon. We ordered at the counter and within 5 minutes, our order was delivered to our table. The Crispy Pork Salad w/ mixed greens, fuji apple, fennel, whole grain mustard & tarragon vinaigrette ($11) arrived in a HUGE bowl: bit.ly/2wFnWzc . You can't tell in the picture but it was large enough for two meals. The mixed greens were fresh, crisp, and nicely dressed. It was topped with a generous amount of crispy pork that reminded me of a "healthier" version of chicharrón. You get the satisfying crunch and salty, pork flavor without all the attached fat and skin. The tartness of the apples and the tanginess of the mustard & tarragon vinaigrette perfectly cut through all the richness. Unless you're Mia Khalifa, all that crispy pork chewing will give your mouth one of the most intense workouts ever but it's worth it. One of the best salads I've had and I'm so not a salad person. We also shared the Daily Special: Rotisserie Porchetta w/ house baked beans, mixed greens ($14): bit.ly/2MJdqBM . It was meh and if you're expecting Roli Roti or Filipino style lechon, you will be disappointed too. The skinless pork pieces were hard and chewy, though the chimichurri had a good flavor and acidity. The house baked beans were hella salty. Unless we got a bad patch of porchetta, not recommended. Service was friendly and prompt. Yay for complimentary cucumber infused water. Table seating for about 25 people and high top seating for about 15-17 people. Some of the tables are too close to each other so your chair will hit the person's chair in back of you and vice versa. 5 stars for the Crispy Pork Salad and 2 stars for the Porchetta Plate but giving Elmira a solid 4 stars because the prices are so reasonable for SF. If you're tired of your sad desk salad or sandwich, give Elmira a try!
