What a disappointment, no attention to detail. We came here yesterday for our wedding anniversary. We saw the restaurant on a documentary set in Chicago where restaurants were working hard preparing to receive potential Michelin stars. Esme looked exciting and the type of restaurant me and my husband enjoy splurging on for unique well rounded food experiences. This place is not it. The food was good, but not blown away by any means. The service was an absolute disappointment with no attention to detail. Maybe if service was better it would have elevated the experience as a whole, I don’t know. Our main server came to our table once and asked how the food was. We had no idea where we were in the courses or what the progression was going to be because the server never came. The puzzle box course came out and they came to remove the box before we even finished the course. There was still food in the second drawer which was wide open, again no attention to detail. Some people come around wiping water marks off the table, but you can have crumbs everywhere and no one will come to clean the table. There’s a course with watermelon and dashi, they pour the dashi table side. A server came to pour the dashi, it’s dripping down the pot and she uses her hand to catch what’s dripping, doesn’t bother to wipe her hands after. I’m sure there’s a cleaner way to do this at a restaurant this caliber. Where at the end of the course, I guess, because they put down the dessert item and thank us for coming. Again, other than assuming we had no idea we were at the end. Felt like it ended abruptly. We finished our cocktails before the dessert even came out and no one ever asked if we wanted another cocktail or if we were interested in a dessert drink. I would expect to have our server ask us if we wanted any drinks at the end of the night in general and since we were at the last course and it was our anniversary. A server came to clear our plates at the end and asked how the desserts were, being very disappointed in the total experience for a restaurant this caliber and the experience we had anticipated I provided honest feedback. They tried to make it up at the end of the night even though we said we didn’t want anything and were just looking to end the night. They brought some things out for us which was nice, but again not what we wanted. We would have preferred to just have a great dining experience that we expected to have while celebrating our anniversary. Pretty disappointed we wasted a special day here. I’ve had better service at steakhouses in the city. We’ve been to other Michelin star restaurants in the city and we were just coming off of going to one the other week and were completely blown away but the other restaurant. We expected a great experience here, but unfortunately we didn’t get it. They blamed it on an off night, but I doubt that was the case given the overall experience.

Esmé offers an incredible and unique experience of dining in an art gallery. The dishes themselves were beautiful, with creative combinations of flavors and perfect preparation. Between the fun and personable staff, great ambiance, and delicious meal, I would highly recommend to anyone looking for a nicer dinner at a fair price point. Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5
