My acquaintance had a latte and thought it was good as well.
They have sandwiches, sorry not cool I am supposed to say paninis, éclairs, cookies and biscuits with which they do brisk business.

A: This café sits on top of the first set of escalators, but below the food court (forgive me, Dine On 3) level. They have the level to themselves, which means they dining area balcony overlooks part of the Yorkdale Mall. The decor is chic and modern and the premises are clean. It is nice, but being in a mall there is obviously a low ceiling for ambiance through which they cannot break.
An innovation is that the sweets and sandwiches are carefully positioned between the customers and the staff under glass seemingly within reach. Contrast that with a place like Tim Horton's where the donuts and fritters are behind the staff. This gives the appearance of reachability, while the proximity was communicative to customers. Nearly everyone was ordering something to eat and nearly everyone was doing so unexpectedly.

T: There were three staff members on duty, about ten people queued (joys of a mall) and it took ten minutes to order, pay and leave. While the three ladies were trained to multitask (would alternate between taking orders from the middle of the line, preparing the order and punching it in) the process was slowed by customers noticing the available edibles, contemplating buying one or more and slowing down the line. The two ladies in front of me and the gentleman behind did not even know what they had ordered. They asked the staff after clearly being suckered by the visual cues. Illy should add second sample of its offering where the line begins to form so customers have a chance to be tempted (and pick) earlier. The biggest problem is getting in and out of Yorkdale, but unless one rides the subway, that is another story.

S: The employees worked hard and were functional. They ask whether one wants to eat inside or take the order out. Eating upstairs in the food court is the same as going out. This is unfortunate as I was meeting with someone and we were going upstairs. Staying in gives one their branded cups and saucers out of which a drink will very likely taste much better than out of a paper cup.
Espressamente Illy is likely a showcase store meant to promote the products. You might have seen their canisters or branded coffee elsewhere, but I believe this is their only café store - that I know of anyway. Think the Sony Store. As such, the café also sells branded merchandise, as well as cakes, pastries, aforementioned sandwiches and so on. The food court is lacking similar choices, but Indigo's cafe is another option. Also in the mall is a Second Cup.
(It Is) Better Than The Competition. E: This is a limited review as I only had a hot chocolate here last Thursday, but the cup was above average. I have had some real watery concoctions in Toronto and Illy's, while not the end-all of beverages, was superior. It had a richer taste. In fact, it had taste (take that Starbucks)! I also appreciated how the drink was warm all the way to the bottom. The hot chocolate was actually $1. The latte was $2.00.
