I hosted a dinner program in a private room, and did not dine in the general seating. For a private event I was impressed. Our room was on a different floor and very quiet. Service was good and the food was fantastic.

This is a tough review to write. Part of me wants to give it 3 stars, and part 1. I'll compromise at 2 and explain why. To begin, Farallon is an SF institution, alive since the first dot-com boom. However, it's also a bit of a tourist trap, as you'd expect from its Union Square location. Not having visited Farallon for a decade, I was awed by the decor. Not many restaurants, in this day and age in SF, lean so heavily into themed decor, as Farallon does with it's "Under the Sea" furnishings. Perhaps not for everyone, but I found it charming and immersive. Multiple dining options are available including the main restaurant, the Meduse lounge, and happy hour. We chose the main restaurant. Service began very polished, almost mockingly so, though issues arose later. Service can also be quite slow. We were informed that we could partake in the prix-fixe ($80/3, $95/4) or order a-la-carte. We opted for the latter. BE FOREWARNED: PRICES ARE NOT POSTED FOR A-LA-CARTE ITEMS. See below for prices. Be sure to request bread! They'll bring it to you for free, but not unless you ask. Bread is nice and warm, though the butter, while tasty, was cold and hard to spread. Cocktails are well-made; quality. Wine and spirit list is extensive and high-quality. We had two cocktails, the Post Street Sidecar ($15) and Southfork Cafe ($12), as well as a glass of zinfandel ($14). Food is very good, but portions are small. For our dinner, we chose: Lightly-brined kampachi sashimi (4/5): Delicious and piquant, though very small portion size, 2/3 what you'd expect. $20 Local Mixed Greens (3/5): Basic salad with dates and goat cheese. Woefully overpriced a-la-carte. $20 Hand-rolled gnocchi and bolognese (4/5): Our favorite dish of the night, succulent and rich, with pillowy, well-cooked gnocchi. Though again, portion size is tiny. $20 Grilled Rare Tombo Tuna (2/5): The biggest letdown of the night, especially considering the price. The tuna "steak" was tiny, a three-bite meal for me. While it was indeed served rare, it didn't receive enough of a sear and arrived cool. Laughably overpriced. $49 The biggest issue is this. We found the meal fine prior to the confusion as to bill. When we receive the bill, we were charged for one 4-course dinner. While we ordered four items, we had clearly instructed the server that we'd be ordering a-la-carte. I asked him about this and he claimed the 4-course meal was a "better deal". I then asked him for the price of the a-la-carte items. He takes out a notepad and purports to do some math, mumbling prices. He then looks up, surprised, and says, "You're right. I'll make the correction now." He takes the bill and we lean back, thinking all is well. Five minutes later, the guy returns with a bill that's $20 more! He makes no mention of this, simply setting it in front of me. When I protest, he remarks, "The computer does math better than me." I instructed him to revert to charging for the four course menu. The issue with ordering a-la-carte is that it seems like they're making up prices as they go along. If I had known the salad or sashimi was going to be $20, or the tuna $49, you can bet I wouldn't have ordered any of it. We left feeling as if the waiter was trying to scam us. We dine out a LOT and have not felt this way in ages. Not the way you, as a business, want to end the customer's experience, and due to this, we won't be returning. If you do visit Farallon, perhaps try the Meduse Lounge, Happy Hour, or be on-guard in the main restaurant. The prix-fixe is not worth the price and...I'll emphasize this...CONFIRM PRICES UP FRONT IF YOU ORDER A-LA-CARTE. Grand total for two: $175 (with - as you may guess - a low tip). Food: 3.5 (though small portions) Ambiance: 4 Service: 1.5 (though would have been 3 without the issues above) Value: 1.5
