A Tale of Two Visits Fernando's Mexican Cuisine, 4347 W. Northwest Highway About two month ago, I was part of a group having dinner at Fernando's - the first time at the restaurant for me. It was so disappointing that I wrote a very critical - but very accurate - Yelp review that focused mainly on the service, or to be more accurate, the lack of it. The management obviously keeps track of any mentions of the restaurant in the social media, and I was contacted by Courtney C., a manager at the restaurant, who apologized profusely for my bad experience and urged me to give them another try. I appreciated their follow up, but was in no mood to return. After more urgings from Courtney to give them another chance, a friend and I decided on the spur of the moment to make a return visit. It happened to be on the Friday night before Christmas Eve - probably one of the busiest nights of the year for the restaurant. When we walked in the door, the place was packed. Before I could turn around to leave, I was very cordially greeted, and we were escorted immediately to a table and given menus. As soon as we were seated, our waitress - Mayra P. - appeared, greeted us with a very genuine smile and took our drink order. Remember her name as there will be more about her later. As Mayra left to get our drinks, another smiling person delivered a basket of chips with four different sauces. Mayra and the drinks followed in short order. She very efficiently and patiently answered our menu questions, took our order, checked to be sure our drinks were satisfactory and left to place the order. After a few more minutes, Mayra returned to let us know our food would be out in five to ten minutes. I had a question about the sauces that were served with the chips, and Mayra noticed that we were missing one. Off she went again and returned with the missing sauce. Minutes later, she brought our food - piping hot, generous servings and quite delicious. I had a combination plate which included a crispy taco so full of meat I could barely add the toppings which were conveniently served on the side. My friend had an enchilada plate with one spinach enchilada and one chicken enchilada - one of several combinations that were available. Again, the food was excellent, and Mayra smilingly appeared to make sure everything was to our liking. Even though the restaurant was quite busy, we never felt rushed. On the contrary, Mayra checked on us frequently, removed empty plates and kept everything flowing smoothly. When it was apparent we had finished, she took our order for another drink and offered dessert which we declined. After the drink and the check were presented. Mayra again took the time to thank us, whisked the check away and returned with the change when we had just about finished the final drink. This visit was the exact polar opposite of the first one. It was a textbook display of an efficient, courteous dining experience from the first greeting to the final holiday wishes as we left. I have no problem recommending Fernando's. It is certainly deserving of five stars with Mayra getting a ten on a scale of one to ten for her excellent service and obvious pleasure in making her customers happy.
