The ambiance was nice (open, bright, welcoming). The wait staff was very attentive with great recommendations. The food was delicious. I have no complaints. Go and enjoy.

I had visited the original location (in Scotland) this past October and was absolutely blown away by the uniqueness and quality of the restaurant. Located in the very small (~500 residents) town of Ballater Scotland, a few hours north of Edinburgh in the Highlands, the restaurants quality was world class in every respect. Upon returning to the states and learning of the DC location from the waiter in Ballater, I was hell bent on making sure I "spread the word" to my DC friends and made it a point to make a reservation while in town. A trip to DC for Mother's Day Weekend was the perfect opportunity to visit with my party of 8. Upon arrival for our 7:30pm Saturday night reservation, we were met by the Hostess and lead to our table. My initial impression was that the "warmth" of the Ballater location did not exist here. The restaurant was huge (although beautiful) when considering the size of their sister restaurant. We went on to be enthusiastically engaged by our waiter for the evening and ordered drinks and wine. Following getting drinks delivered, we ordered a number of "small plates" and appetizers for the table. These included the Tuna Tartar, Smoked Trout Crumpet, Crab Fritters, Roasted Virginia Peanuts, Parker House Rolls, Local Oysters (that came dressed in something called ajo blanco), Local farms radishes and vegetables with whipped bean dip and a Fish Frito Misto. The Smoked Trout Crumpet and Tuna Tartar were enjoyed by those who had it, The Roasted Peanuts (although small for Virginia) were good with fried garlic chips included as were the Radishes and whipped Bean Dip. The Oysters were terrible, the sauce was flavorless and worse, the bottom abductor muscles were not separated from the shell making them impossible to eat effectively. An absolute disaster and very amateurish. The Crab Fritter was tough and fishy. The Fish Frito Misto was another failure. For some reason, the Chef chose to fry what appeared to be Top Neck sized hard shell clams. They were so tough and sandy that i had to physically block others from taking any from the two orders we had without explanation because it took my over 5 minutes to chew it and get it down before I could explain to the rest of my party why they shouldn't take any. Again, another very amateurish approach to the dish. Literally the worst I've had anywhere on the planet. What was also even more surprising is that when we were "done" with our appetizers, the waitstaff didn't even inquire why none of two orders of Frito Misto were not touched. I was encouraged by my party to say something to the waitstaff but failed to as I was trying focus on having a good time rather than turning our dinner into a complaining session. For Entrees, we had a couple of Bouillabaisses (no Tomato or Saffron we could perceive so prepared in a very untraditional way), whole Grilled Fish with Jerk seasoning (which we originally told was a Flounder but told it was a Fluke when served (I'm aware of the closeness in species), a couple of "Whole Fried Fish" which we were told were "Red Snapper from New Jersey". Now, although possible, it is VERY rare that Red Snapper are sourced from New Jersey, especially in May. Either way, we "went with it" and whatever the fish was (it didn't look like a Red Snapper, it was enjoyed by our party. We also had some Asparagus and a couple of Green Salads for the table. These were both very good. I feel terrible that this restaurant bore zero resemblance to the spectacular Fish Shop in Ballater. I wanted to love it equally but left completely unsatisfied and disappointed especially given our $1,000+ bill. Meal type: Dinner Price per person: $100+ Food: 2 Service: 4 Atmosphere: 4

Thank you for your feedback Brian. Although we have the same name, and follow the same ethos, our restaurants are very different. We have leaned into that and I would like to say that your experience was not our norm. It seems as though you did not truly enjoy any of the food you had, and I truly apologize. We had dinner at this restaurant on the first night we got to Washington and stayed in a hotel nearby. We chose this restaurant based on ChatGPT’s recommendation. First of all, the atmosphere was great and our first impression was good. However, while I appreciate the restaurant’s effort, we were quite disappointed. Our waiter was very disorganized. He spent a lot of time trying to tell something we were not interested and failed to explain to us what a main dish was which had a French word. They also messed up with the timing of servings. We ordered starters and main dishes but after 30 minutes they took everything from the kitchen at the same time. The three huge plates were too big for our small table and they had to juggle between items to fit all of the at the same time. It turned out the food portion was extremely small. So small that I didn’t even have time to take a picture of my food. We ended up wasting more than an hour of our time and $100 and walking out hungry. After leaving we walked along the Wharf and realized there were hundreds of restaurants and had to sit down at another restaurant to get a full meal. Food: 2 Service: 2 Atmosphere: 4
