When I was a kid growing up in Sierra Vista, Arizona Royal Slice Pizza was my absolute favorite pizza, Dave Fusco the owner had a little tiny takeout spot on Fry boulevard and highway 92. The private school I went to Dave would deliver pizza too, how it worked was I think it was 1982 or '83, every Monday however, many slices you wanted you would prepay and then you would get these little cardboard squares to represent how many slices you purchased for Friday, back then it was $0.50 a slice which was beyond generous from Dave to our school. My family didn't have a lot of money so Fridays was my favorite day during the week to get my favorite pizza. Couple years later Dave opened a much larger establishment right outside the gate of Fort Huachuca My dad actually help built the benches for the new restaurant, during that time I was able to help out in the kitchen which just meant I would make my own calzone the recipe for his dough was what set it apart from anything else. It's Detroit style but it's not, it's much lighter. It's the way they proof the dough, it's completely unique taste with less oil and a perfect amount of salt. Flash forward to 2023. I'm now 52 years old and was on a golf trip this summer to Denver with the buddy of mine, I do the Dave Portnoy pizza restaurants throughout the country as I'm usually on the road 52 weeks a year. We were finishing up a golf outing and I looked for best Pizza in Denver and scrolled out on Google maps and saw Fusco Pizza and didn't think there was a chance in hell that the little Sierra Vista favorite pizza joint would have been just north of Denver. I always said if I could find the recipe I would open a pizza restaurant and knew it would be successful because of the ingredients and that amazing dough. I reached out to my old principal who still lives in Tucson and he confirmed that Dave's kids opened up a pizza joint north of Denver. I had an unexpected trip to Denver today and after reaching out on Facebook to the restaurant was pleasantly surprised that they are continuing with their family pizza restaurant. I flew from Atlanta to Denver and then an hour and 20 minutes north to order childhood favorite pizza that I have not had in 37 years. The restaurant is in a quaint little part of town just off the square. They've got some really good beer on top so I started with one of those and then ordered my pie. It's amazing as you get older. Some things you think you really loved when you were a child do not hold up years later. This was not the case. Here the taste of the pizza, how light it was how crispy it was Detroit style but not Detroit style not heavy like that. That not like Jets pizza which is a solid chain pizza in Michigan that is popping up everywhere. I had a couple slices in the restaurant. Absolutely amazed at the quality that after all of these years has been passed down to Dave's kids. Then I get back in my rental and drove all the way down to Colorado springs for a meeting tomorrow. I've done quite a bit of Google reviews of food and this pizza is still 37 years one of my favorite pizza's in the entire country, there are different styles of pizza, I like tavern style. Style I like coal-fired. I like wood fired but this one here is just unique. That's all I can say and from the bottom of my heart. Thank you for not changing anything almost 40 years later and being a step above so many other pizza joints. Anytime I fly into Denver I'm going to make the drive to Fusco Pizza. I'm sure your dad is proud of all of you for caring on the tradition of great pizza and great service. Remember always try to support local!!!!
