Granite's Famous Cheesesteaks is hidden in a mini strip mall off of Foothills boulevard. If you blink you might miss it. There is an impressive variety of cheesesteak, wings, burgers and fries to choose from. The cashier wasn't friendly or welcoming. He picked up his pan and ticket book, then looked at me. The traditional cheesesteak sandwich arrived hot and steaming. Everything was good about the cheesesteak. The taste, temperature, texture, cheese to meat ratio and softness of the softness of the bread. This could be a good lunch date spot, since they have cornhole on the patio. It's no secret that sandwiches are a popular choice for people world wide. A sandwich, at its core, is meat between two slices of bread; however, everyone has their own take on it and because of this, some delicious concoctions have emerged as staples among the culinary world. One place in the Sacramento Valley has taken a traditional East Coast staple and brought it here for Northern Californians to enjoy. Let's dig into, Granite's Famous Cheesesteaks & Wings. The Place (4 out of 5) - Located in Rocklin, CA, Granite's Famous Cheesesteaks & Wings shares its real estate with a Midas Service Shop and a gas station. I don't mean they're in the same building, but rather they're in the same complex. Surrounded by some industrial warehouses and corporate centers, the place is in a prime location to conjure up some locals while still making sure to attract those familiar with the area. That being said, if you're out of town, the place can easily be missed as there really isn't much signage, but once you find it, you'll never forget where it's at. The space is big for what it is, offering outdoor patio seating and decent space inside with both tables and booths. The Service (3.5 out of 5) - Here's the thing, I've been here twice since being able to sit down and write this review and I want to make sure I'm clear with this "3.5" rating. It's not that it's bad by any means and it's not that I've had a bad experience because EVERYONE that has helped me has been wonderful. It's just that you know when people's strengths are back of the house vs front of the house. That being said, everyone I've come in contact with was welcoming and definitely willing to accommodate to make sure they get your order right. At the end of the day, it's a local sandwich/sub/cheesesteak joint and so that's what you should go into it expecting to be. The Food (4 out of 5) - FULL DISCLAIMER: I've never been to Philly so I literally have nothing to compare it against, but for anyone who enjoys a cheesesteak there are things to look out for. For the most part, Granite's delivers on most cheesesteak fronts. The bread is soft, the ingredients/protein are a-plenty, and it can be a mess, but let's dive a little deeper. I know there are staple cheesesteaks that exist and when I saw a "Wiz" on the menu, I knew I had to get that one. For those that don't know, "Wiz" refers to the cheese wiz sauce that can often be poured over a cheesesteak; Granite's calls theirs a Nacho Steak and comes with onions, and mild or hot peppers. I'll go ahead and say this right off the bat, the meat can tend to be a little on the dry side and in need of seasoning; however, depending on the cheesesteak you get, the other ingredients can definitely add some moisture and flavor. In my case, the nacho cheese sauce was able to provide the texture and "juicy" context I was looking for while the peppers and the onions added a bit of the seasoning and flavor profile I was looking for. That said, a little salt and pepper while its on the grill wouldn't hurt. The gem here are the wings they serve....yes, chicken wings and cheesesteaks; you can't go wrong. Even better, they have a combo in which you can get a cheesesteak and 5 wings for $12; it's perfect. Now, I happen to like my wings well done/extra crispy and this is how Grantie's serves theirs. BIG plus in my book. In addition to that, the sauces they offer for them are amazing! I first had the Lemon Pepper wings and I still think about them to this day. It has the bite and tang of lemon you need while offering the spice of pepper and it's absolutely DRENCHED in this sauce. Sooooooo good. Overall (4 out of 5) - I can only imagine that this isn't the best cheesesteak out there, but being in the Valley in Northern California, it's hard for me to imagine that a better place for cheesesteaks exists out there. If there is, let me know! Sure, it may have a few short falls, but when you are in the mood for a cheesesteak, this place will more than fit the bill; PLUS the ability to get some killer wings while you're at it, amazing. TIP: Grab a fork, you'll need it to gobble up the meat that WILL fall out. Great job guys, looking forward to the next visit!
