I grew up in Pembroke many years ago before moving to Toronto when I was sixteen. In those early childhood days, I would walk past this grand house and accompanying grounds every day, daydreaming of someday owning it. Unfortunately, like many childhood dreams, that never came to pass. However, more recently, I had the pleasure of staying there on two distinct occasions since it had become The Grey Gables Inn. The experience was both fun and gratifying and satisfied some long-forgotten childhood dreams. The Inn was well-located in the city centre, close to where my father still lives, blocks away, and within an easy walk of the many beautiful adjacent streets, houses, and parks surrounding it. My experience, from booking my room to arriving, staying, eating, and ultimately departing, were all lovely and efficient, made all the more welcoming by the charming proprietors and staff of the Inn who all went out of their way to make my visit and stay both memorable and magical. I cannot recommend enough this magical venue if you should ever have the chance to stay there. It is, without a doubt, worth the experience. Rooms: Although a small establishment, Grey Gables Inn offers several differently sized and configured rooms and options. My favourite, though, is the Majestic - a small suite with a comfy king-sized bed, fireplace, television, and a nice amount of room to move around in, as well as a well-appointed bathroom and sufficient closet space. Nearby activities: Located in the middle of Pembroke and adjacent to a beautiful park that was once part of the original structure's land, you are close to pretty much everything this quaint town offers. Safety: The Inn and the town itself are safe and secure. The owners provide guests with front door keys which they lock after a certain hour each night. Also, each room is securely locked and the main desk is well within the eyes and ears of the proprietors who are personally in the property every day. Walkability: Unquestionably, this is a highly walkable town with lovely, quiet streets and plenty of grand homes to view from its Lumber Baron days of the 1800s, not to mention a quick jaunt to nearby Pansy Patch Park and the quaint main street filled with cute restaurants, shops, historic Pembroke City Hall and Heritage Murals. For access to the Pembroke Mall or any of the numerous tourist establishments including Champlain Trail Museum & Pioneer Village, Pembroke Waterfront Park & Marina, Murray L. Moore Hydro Museum, Hugli's Blueberry Ranch & Gift Store, the Urban Oasis Day Spa and many others, it is best to take a car. Food & drinks: Grey Gables Inn offers delicious in-house dining at two venues - the more formal, The Oak Door, and the casual, The Pantry - featuring a beautifully appointed dining room with weekend breakfast, Sunday Tea, and delicious lunches & dinners. They also host numerous special events, including a Mother's Day special and private weddings, to name just a few. Noteworthy details: The Inn was originally a private, grand home belonging to Edward A. Dunlop (1876-1934), a wealthy industrialist and politician, his wife, Mable Dunlop (nee Ferguson - 1883-1948), and their four children, Mable, Mary, Jean, and Edward Jr. (a disabled WWII War Veteran and one-time M.P.P.). Construction of the house commenced in 1911 and was completed in 1913 at a cost of $75,000, a very large sum for the area and time. In addition to the many bedrooms, bathrooms, expansive kitchen and beautifully appointed dining room, the house also featured a music room, a glass conservatory, a greenhouse, and a wine cellar to name a few. The lands upon which the house was built included an approximately half acre of flower & vegetable gardens plus two, outdoor tennis courts. The lady of the house, Mrs. Mable Dunlop, liked to entertain and kept a staff of several maids (both upstairs and downstairs) as well as a cook, chauffeur, and gardener among others. The family lived there for many years until Mr. Dunlop Sr. moved them to Toronto when he assumed the role of Provincial Treasurer. He served as a conservative member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario for Renfrew North three separate times - from 1903 to 1908, 1911 to 1919 and 1928 to 1934. He served as provincial treasurer from 1930 to 1933. Rooms: 4 Service: 5 Location: 5 Hotel highlights: Luxury, Romantic, Quiet, Great value

First time visit to both Pembroke and Grey Gables Inn this past weekend, while travelling into Quebec. Very impressed with all aspects of the stay. Lisa is a great host and runs a first class operation from start to finish. Oak Door steakhouse on main floor is amazing. Dinner chef certainly knows his trade. And breakfast (included) is equally fresh and high quality. Stayed in Kensington room - very nice. All around good stay, and Lisa was very generous with her time in speaking with us about the history of the building and the renovations. (Special thanks to Lynn for her kind assistance with our booking and during our stay). Jim and Susan. Stayed Nov 17 and 18, 2023. Noteworthy details: Historic Inn with quaint rooms and fine dining Rooms: 5 Service: 5 Location: 5 Hotel highlights: Luxury
