I’ve been to this restaurant MANY times, I used to love it!! Now the quality is terrible and the food is absolutely inedible. I know times are now super tough economically and I cannot believe I WASTED my money and got so excited for food that was grey and didn’t taste like much of anything at all other than what I might imagine was week old chicken. Save your money and don’t waste your time here anymore- I’ve never been so upset and disappointed- I’ll never return. I heard about Hong Kong Star Restaurant thanks to the 2018 list of Yelp's Top 50 Places to Eat in Kansas City. At first, I was a little skeptical that some random Chinese restaurant in Olathe is the top ranked place in an area where BBQ restaurants dominate. The only way to find out was to visit Hong Kong Star Restaurant and try it out for myself. The restaurant is kind of off the beaten path and is in an unassuming little strip mall. It may sound and look like a Chinese fast food restaurant from the name and exterior appearances, but enter inside to be surprised. The restaurant is small but can easily accommodate large groups. The staff is friendly, and the food is made-to-order and delicious. The menu has an authentic version as well as an Americanized version to cater to the different tastes. For those hesitant to get out of their comfort zone, the Americanized menu has familiar dishes such as crab rangoon, egg drop soup, orange chicken, or lo mein. I highly recommend trying the authentic dishes. I have tried the crab and fish maw soup, prawns with walnut in mayonnaise sauce, salt and pepper pork chops, and seafood fried rice. Each dish was spot-on. The prices are reasonable, and portion sizes are relatively generous. All entrees excluding the rice or noodle dishes come with white rice. One entree left me stuffed. If you are in a group, order multiple dishes and share it family-styled. Get a soup, entree, and a rice or noodle dish. Do not be fooled by appearances. Hong Kong Star Restaurant may look like a fast food place, but it is not that. It certainly is the best Chinese restaurant in the area and rightfully deserves its ranking on Yelp's Top 50 Places to Eat in Kansas City list. It is also ranked on the 2018 list of Yelp's Top Places to Eat in the Midwest. Go to Hong Kong Star Restaurant and try it out for yourself. Bring your friends and family so you all can try multiple dishes.
