À Foreigners’ Nightmare — Avoid This Place at All Costs This was hands down the worst dining experience we’ve had in Japan — and possibly anywhere. As the only foreign couple waiting outside, we were told only chicken biryani was available. Everyone else (locals) had full access to the menu and ordered freely. We were rushed to sit down, had our menu taken away in under a minute without a word, and were denied the chance to order anything else. While we sat in silence, dish after dish came out for the others — lamb, eggs. When we questioned the obvious discrimination, the staff suddenly lost their English until we mentioned the word “reservation”, which they clung to as a last-minute excuse. The atmosphere? Cold. The staff? Hostile. The food? Bland and served with a side of humiliation. And to top it all off, they refused card/PayPay payment (only cash for the foreigners, of course). If you’re not Japanese, don’t expect to be treated with basic respect here. There are plenty of incredible places to eat in Kyoto — don’t waste your time, money, or dignity at India Gate.
