Ironside Fish & Oyster Bar is an extremely difficult restaurant in which to obtain a reservation, even mid-week at 5:30 p.m. There is a Happy Hour for $1.00 oysters (but of what quality, I wonder?) from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., which acts as a kind of cattle call to all of Little Italy, so perhaps that explains it. The entire North side of the restaurant near the bar is apparently set aside for walk-ins. The host was efficient and seated me promptly on a comfortable banquette on the South side of the room.  I like the anchor image etched into the tables and the dishes with whimsical line drawings of current and former employees whom the restaurant wanted to honor---there is line cook, "Rogelio", and former manager, "Christy", to name two of the honorees. I noted the "C" in "Christy" was smudged out on one plate---time to retire it in Christy's honor! I also like the mosaic floor and cane-backed bentwood chairs. The décor is very much Parisian seafood house/Brasserie. I am aware Ironside is part of the Craft & Commerce/Born and Raised/ Underbelly Group, so it is not surprising there is an emphasis on a variety of cocktails. In fact, a little book on the history of the cocktails is available. I am pleased that the description of the Mai Tai gives proper credit for its invention to Victor "Trader Vic" Bergeron, whom I used to see at the flagship Trader Vic's Restaurant in San Francisco many years ago. I wanted to try the Shirley Temple. I have not had one since I was a child. What spurred me to thinking about it was a chance meeting with a Navy Seal from Coronado at dinner at Piacere Mio in South Park. He vividly extolled the virtues of the Shirley Temple at Ironside. I must say I was a bit disappointed with the execution at Ironside. The drink was served in a tall glass of mostly crushed ice below which was a reddish liquid. Growing up in San Diego as a child, and going to the South Seas Restaurant on Pacific Highway [now demolished] I remember a short glass, and maybe a liquid of a golden color. Perhaps it is true "You can't go home again".... My designated server, Alex, was personable and attentive. He offered good suggestions and clear responses to my questions. The only thing he did NOT do was pour the wine. That was a disappointment, since the inflated prices of bottles of wine contemplate and include a mark-up for the service of that wine. Perhaps it is because the Ironside management seems more interested in cocktails than wine. Of course, I ordered the famous Lobster Roll. It was warm and buttery and served with crispy French Fries. However, it seemed a bit too "confined" to its roll, and I would have appreciated some looseness to the presentation of the dish.
