In an already expensive city, it’s important to choose wisely when it comes to which restaurant will be your one “fine dining” experience. Unfortunately, a friend’s recommendation (or really, a friend of a friend) does not always hold up and prove true. Sometimes, a supposedly tried and true restaurant hilariously disappoints. If there’s anything that Restaurant Jacobsen has taught me, it’s to utilize Google Map’s feature that allows you to see a restaurant’s peak hours. This is especially relevant if you’re anything like me and feel incredibly uncomfortable when you are one of few patrons present at a restaurant. From my perspective, Restaurant Jacobsen was destined to disappoint as soon as I walked in and it was blatant that the reservation I had previously made was not going to be needed. Nestled within an admittedly cozy looking space, there were two parties present. Both groups were made up of two older individuals who appeared to have already been dining for quite some time. For lack of a better word, the “vibes” were certainly off. I wish I could have turned around at that moment and fled the establishment, but Restaurant Jacobsen’s singular working host was too quick, waiting for me and my friends. He knew without a doubt that I was the one who had made the reservation at the absurd time, and it certainly amused him. After being seated, myself and three of my friends perused the menu, which genuinely didn’t look that bad. Google Maps labels Restaurant Jacobsen as a Danish restaurant, and the friend (of a friend) who had recommended the place had attested to that claim. I was eager to try genuine Danish cuisine after my group’s previous dinners consisted of ramen and 7/11. Our host transformed into our server, quickly asking for our drink orders. I chose “Elderflower,” listed ambiguously under “Beverages.” Elderflower juice? Elderflower flavored water? Concentrate? I had no idea, but the drink actually proved itself as pleasant, far more than the food that was in store. Shrimp cocktail! It caught my eye on the menu. I am an advocate for shrimp cocktail, and I was excited to split the starter with my friend. That excitement slipped when our host/server delivered a salad? Yes, a salad. With small shrimp mixed in and a side of bread and butter. Oh, and no cocktail sauce. I held in my disappointment, it appeared as if my friends were excited for their meals to come. I felt nervous, on the other hand. I had ordered the fried plaice filet with smoked salmon, red sauce, shrimp, asparagus, and caviar. I was feeling adventurous, despite my brewing discomfort as one of the original pairs of patrons at Restaurant Jacobsen had left, leaving my party and two older women with a lot to say to each other as the only remaining guests in the building. I had devoured a fried fish burger earlier that day; I was ready to face any and all kinds of fish. I also really wanted the smoked salmon. And then the meal arrived. Measly strips of smoked salmon. The same dull and lifeless shrimp that had come in the “cocktail.” Worst of all, it dawned on me what the “red sauce” accompanying my dish was, or at least, what the base of this (not even red) sauce was mayonnaise. My fish had been drowned in mayonnaise. I did not finish my food, nor did I particularly enjoy it. The two women who had been chatting since the dawn of time had vanished at some point, leaving me and my friends alone in Restaurant Jacobsen alongside our host/server/bartender (did I mention he also made our drinks?). We wondered if this man-of-many-hats was also our cook, but another employee eventually proved his existence by exiting the kitchen. My friends thoroughly enjoyed their meals, their steaks and meatballs. There was some charm to Restaurant Jacobsen, but it appears to me that it is an establishment suited for the light of day and for those who can stand to consume that much mayonnaise. Personally, I would never recommend this restaurant to a friend, or even a friend of a friend. Service: Dine in Meal type: Dinner Food: 2 Service: 4 Atmosphere: 3
