A classic drive in. Could have been the from the 50’s or 60’s. Great prices. Good food, ice cream, etc. Some nights there is live music. A must visit joint! Price per person: $1–10 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5

I took my 8th grade kid to the Jumping Jacks with her friends to celebrate graduating middle school. The place was packed! The line is about 15min long on a Wednesday evening. The food is classic American fast food, burgers, fries, sandwiches, sodas and ice cream. The food was decent. The price was $10-20 per person. Lots of families and kids. They do have plenty of tables and chairs. The river was by the parking lot. We took a nice walk along the river to see people water skiing. Overall a nice experience. Meal type: Dinner Price per person: $10–20

I am writing this to bring attention to a very upsetting experience my family and I had during a recent visit to Jumpin’ Jack’s in Scotia. I was there with friends and my five year old son, who is autistic. My son is a kind, loving child, and like many children on the autism spectrum, he sometimes interacts with his surroundings in ways that may seem different but are not intended to be disruptive. As we walked in to purchase ice cream, my son lightly touched a sign near the entrance. A staff member who was cleaning immediately yelled, “Don’t touch that.” I took hold of both of my son’s hands to prevent him from touching anything else and chose not to make an issue of it. A short time later, while I was ordering ice cream, I asked another employee how much the ice cream cost. She loudly replied, “Three dollars.” As I reached into my bag to pay, I briefly let go of my son’s hand. He lightly tapped the counter, something many young children do while waiting. The same staff member who had spoken to him earlier again yelled at my son to stop tapping. I responded by saying, “Excuse me, he’s a child.” Her reply was that his behavior was “rude and disrespectful,” implying that my son lacked manners. I then explained that my son is on the autism spectrum. While I understand that autism does not excuse every behavior, parents of neurodivergent children work incredibly hard every day to teach, guide, and support their children. There are also moments when children, regardless of ability, simply act like children. What made this interaction even more disappointing was that the employee told me she was familiar with autism because her nephew is on the spectrum. If that is true, I would have expected greater patience, compassion, and understanding rather than criticism and judgment. Throughout the interaction, I felt as though my son was being singled out from the moment we entered. I also felt judged as a parent, as though I was failing to raise my child properly. No other staff member stepped in to help de-escalate the situation or offer understanding. Every child deserves to feel welcomed and accepted in our community, including children with disabilities. I hope this experience encourages management to provide staff with additional training on autism awareness, neurodiversity, and respectful customer interactions. A little patience and understanding can make an enormous difference for families like mine. I also believe there is no place in customer service for individuals who treat children or families this way. Businesses like Jumpin’ Jack’s have earned a strong reputation in our community over many years, and it only takes one employee’s actions to damage that reputation and make families feel unwelcome. My intention is not to criticize the business as a whole, but to encourage better training and accountability so that every family is treated with dignity and respect. As the mother of an autistic child, experiences like this are exactly why I worry about my son’s future every single day. I worry that he will continue to encounter people who judge him before they understand him, or who mistake his disability for bad behavior. No parent should have to fear that their child will be discriminated against simply because they experience the world differently. I hope our community continues to move toward greater acceptance, understanding, and inclusion. Children like my son deserve patience, kindness, and the opportunity to participate in everyday activities without being made to feel like they don’t belong. Food: 1 Service: 1 Atmosphere: 1
