I’ve visited this KFC on Milpas Street multiple times over the past year, and I’ve actually walked out without ordering more than once because the place consistently feels grimy, empty, and poorly managed. Today I finally went through with an order because the Tuesday 8‑piece for $10 deal was a good value for hosting a gathering. The pickup experience confirmed why I usually avoid this location. I ordered the 8‑piece Chicken Only Tuesday special ($10 + $0.88 tax = $10.88). When I arrived, the employee asked how many plates I wanted. Without thinking, I said “ten,” which is normal for a family‑size order. He immediately pushed back and said he would only give me four. When I questioned it, he claimed the plates were “reusable,” even though they were clearly just thin paper bucket plates. The defensiveness over something as basic as plates was strange and unnecessary. Then I asked for hot sauce and was given exactly four packets — again, unusually stingy for an 8‑piece order. Most KFC locations hand you a handful without hesitation. Between the plate rationing and the condiment rationing, it felt like they were trying to conserve supplies in a way I’ve never seen at any other KFC. The interior of the restaurant still feels the same as every other time I’ve stepped inside: grimy sticky floors, uninviting atmosphere, and no customers. It doesn’t feel like a typical KFC environment at all. The staff energy is low, the service feels reluctant, and the whole place gives off a neglected vibe. The older male that usually works the front does not care about your order. As for the food itself: taste was 2/10. Partially Edible, but not great. The deal price was the best part of the experience. Overall, this location consistently feels off — from cleanliness to customer service to the strange restrictions on basic items like plates and sauces. The $10 Tuesday deal is solid, but the pickup experience and environment make it hard to recommend this particular store. This KFC exists in Santa Barbara which is troubling. My car needs a repair to continue moving, off to O'Reilly's parking lot! but first..food. KFC our friend and chicken deputant looms mere blocks away, it's iconic "KFC" sign illuminated, dancing in the sunlight. The promises you've made and never kept. Can we do this one more time? I entered the front door to a vacant lobby, this is going to be easy I thought to myself. One original Chicken sandwich combo with mashed potatoes was a layup, or so I thought... The proceeding events are nothing short of miraculously, hilariously, and tragically catastrophic. I will call the first employee Ted for anonymity purposes. I entered KFC and are met by employee Ted who has many barriers to performing his duties. None of which I will describe but all of such physical and mental deficiencies are factors here. I ordered a chicken sandwich combo with mashed potatoes. My friend orders a 9 piece combo. Which was repeated back slowly many times to a fascinating smile and confusing over animated eagerness. The manager enters stage left (who I will refer to as Pam), with no words approached the register at the end of my current transaction whilst I'm holding my debit card in my hand at the point of sale machine, and she mistakenly presses a "pay with cash" button. The chain of events set in motion in that moment is the reason I pen this Chicken fable to the world. Pam and Ted needed to retake my order, tell the line cook to ignore the first order, and handle the now arriving customers that had accumulated from such a long interaction to begin with. Ted "hastily" re typed the order into the register and successfully selected card transaction. Finally. The total is displayed on the screen, 20+ seems to be a normal amount of currency for chicken I don't know, does anyone even know anymore. My friend and I sat down, relieved. I scanned my receipt to see if it was truly over. To my horror, it had just begun. It said fries, as my side, not mashed potatoes. I like fries, I got curly fries later that night. But I wanted mashed potatoes and gravy. I glance at the line that consists of four to five people. Ted is ready for his moment. After some amount of time the customers are all sitting, choking on laughter because... Ted. The levels of communication breakdown is such as a computer with no RAM. There was no short term memory, if Ted knew more words in English, (he is not Latino *shout out all the hard working Latinos crushing it) I doubt it would do anything but pose him harm because of the required data that is attached to words. I walk up to Ted, and explain the fry, mashed potato situation. Meanwhile the kitchen had made the order that was supposed to be cancelled and handed it to the wrong customer. He held my receipt as if he was decoding hieroglyphics. He walks away and immediately brings me a side of mashed potatoes. I explained to his surprise, that I don't have my food. So he takes it back into the kitchen, which I can plainly see. Other customers appear to be receiving their food. The vary concept that someone was in the bathroom astonished Ted as he desperately wanted to unite him with his 7 piece. I got up from my seat to see what was taking Ted and Pam so long. They had three boxes, bags, and a few items. An intense stare from them both, they stood side by side with big surgeon energy, and the confidence of baby kittens, they moved in perplexingly slow motion for how simple the task was, which may have been aggravated by a language barrier that I guess using words a lot doesn't fix. After a robot chickens episode worth of time Ted put the order at the counter and pleas for mercy despite the previously mentioned setbacks. My friends 9 piece was evidently downgraded to a 7 piece without his consent. He walks up and explains the problem, Ted eventually understands he must release the chicken. I am a chef, the chicken sandwich was cold, the mashed potatoes were not the worst I've ever had from KFC. The soda machine functioned correctly. Customer area was clean. Food exists here. Meal type: Lunch Price per person: $1–10 Food: 1 Service: 1 Atmosphere: 3
