Hadn’t been to Kabab City in a while, but we used to really enjoy the food and atmosphere. They remodeled since our last visit, and honestly, the place looks great. It’s amazing what fresh paint and new décor can do while customer service quietly packs its bags and leaves through the back door. The staff was very excited to tell us about all the new menu items. “You’re gonna be in for a treat, we added lamb, fish…” and honestly they hyped it up like Gordon Ramsay himself was back there hand-feeding the customers. We were excited. We ordered a falafel wrap, chicken & beef kababs, and lamb shanks. We asked the waitress how many pieces came with the chicken & beef kabab plate. She confidently said “8.” Now, maybe that’s partially on me for assuming that meant 8 chicken and 8 beef pieces… but apparently in Kabab City math, 4 chicken + 4 beef = a luxury dining experience. For $22 before tax, each cube of meat came out to roughly the price of a small cryptocurrency investment. Then halfway through waiting for our food, we got informed they were out of lamb shanks. Which was impressive considering they had just enthusiastically advertised all the new lamb options like it was the second coming of Mediterranean cuisine. So we switched to lamb chops instead. The shanks were $33, the chops were $35, and rather than simply saying “no worries, we’ll just price match since we’re out of what you ordered,” they refunded the full amount and re-ran the card for the extra $2. Nothing says “valued customer” quite like making someone do banking transactions between courses. My wife and I have both worked in the restaurant and service industry for years, so we understand mistakes happen. But usually the goal is to make the customer leave happy. A free side, dessert, discount, literally even a “hey sorry about that” with some effort behind it goes a long way. The objective should be “how do we make sure these people come back?” not “how do we make this experience feel like a mildly inconvenient DMV visit with hummus?” The remodel is beautiful though.
