I have lived in Rye for one year now and the Kino Rye has become part of my life. The staff are charming , the coffee is great. As one would expect the films shown are very well selected . For me to go with friends or alone is so easy . The wine offered is good and the prices are fair . To enjoy a coffee in the morning either inside or in the beautiful courtyard garden is a real treat . I could not recommend this venue highly enough !

Thus is my dream cinema, and I just wish I lived closer! We stayed in Rye last week during the heatwave and spent three happy afternoons here, luxuriating in the cool, sprawled on the extremely comfortable seats, clutching cold drinks and watching great films! It's a really charming cinema with an equally charming outdoor space. The range of films was great, as was the cafe range of food and drinks. The staff were all lovely.

EDIT: I’m disappointed with the suggestion that this was just me “feeling insulted”. Being told something is “cheeky” in that tone, after I immediately apologised and explained I genuinely didn’t know the rule, is going to land exactly how it did. There really isn’t another reasonable way to take that in the moment. You’ve mentioned large signs at the entrance, but I’ve checked your Instagram and they most definitely not large. More importantly, customers shouldn’t only find out about a policy after arriving at the entrance, by then it’s too late. If it’s a rule, it needs to be made clear before people travel or book. I appreciate you saying you’ll add it to the website, but that should have been in place already. I won’t be changing my review as it reflects my experience of both the communication and how I was spoken to. ORIGINAL REVIEW: Bad experience. Last night my partner and I brought a milkshake in, and when I showed my ticket, the guy behind the bar told me I wasn't allowed to bring my own things. I immediately apologised and said I genuinely didn't know, but he then proceeded to say how "cheeky" it was in a really condescending tone. You’d think me apologising and explaining I didn't know would be enough, but he clearly felt it necessary to have a personal dig instead of providing decent customer service. I go to the Hawkhurst branch quite often, and have never had an issue bringing a drink in. It was a total power trip that completely soured the experience. It’s insulting to be spoken to like that, especially when I’m choosing to pay more to support an independent cinema over a chain in this current climate. I’ve checked the entrance, the website, and my booking confirmation, and there is absolutely nothing about this rule anywhere (nothing obvious anyway!). I’ve seen management reply to other reviews claiming this is a thing, but you can’t expect people to scout your Google reviews ahead of time to find the rules. It needs to be clearly listed on the website so people actually know before they arrive. The attitude was completely unnecessary. Go to Hawkhurst instead.

It is so disappointing to receive a 1-star review, when we’re generally praised for our friendly customer service. We’re sorry that you felt insulted - I am certain that this was not intended. We appreciate all our customers’ business, especially in this tough economic climate. There are large signs displayed at the entrance to both venues politely asking customers not to consume their own food and drink, along with some other ‘house rules’. You can see this sign in the photo pinned to our Rye Instagram @kino_rye . We will add some text to our website as an additional measure. We hope that you may consider revising your 1-star review in light of this response.
