One of the rare restaurants where the tables are not on top of each other. The food is delicious, the waitresses attentive. I will go back there Service: Dine in Meal type: Dinner Food: 4 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 4

When I was young, “going Dutch” meant splitting the bill. In Lio it may mean splitting hairs. And this, I should explain. We arrived as a jolly party of worker drones at the tail end of a two-day offsite that happened onsite. No, me neither. Long story. Never mind. The waitress took us to a long table in a cosy space with gorgeous hygge interior. Note to self: wear my best scandy woolly jumper next time. Then the young sprightly staff announced with carefree joy that we should organise ourselves and only order four different starters and four different main courses from the extensive and delicious looking menu, because the kitchen are worried they can’t cope. I had to have this explained to me twice. “So you can order anything you like, but you must all have the same?” Is that a new concept? I was told ‘No, it’s because we are a lot of people.’ My head pivoted like a meerkat for accuracy and I counted 11 hungry souls in an 70 seater restaurant. Isn’t the point of a restaurant that you can order anything you like from the menu they give you? Not in this place. Well, I never. Is it me? Am I splitting hairs already? We organised ourselves and a short negotiation in Flemish later we were sorted. Further note to self: Never travel to Dilbeek without a Dutchman. Again, I might be splitting hairs but There is no menu in English. Fear not hungry Englishman! The food is all excellent here. Just point and shoot from the fork. Dinner at Lio is a joyful and tasty experience. There is genuine flair and generosity about the plate. Thoughtful combinations of homemade pairings with a clear commitment to flavour, this is my kind of place. Lio brings umami to any demanding diner’s soul. The portions are generous and the chef is clearly intentional about quality. Nothing is rushed or pretentious. This was a great dinner in a great setting. Dilbeek might just becoming a discreet hotbed of fine dining experiences. We laughed, we ate, we drank and were merry. The staff were attentive and caring without being intrusive, and despite the hiccup with the ordering we all had a great evening. By the end of dinner one of us had become a grandfather again. Round about the last mouthful of his main course, I reckon. It was a strange achievement given the context because I didn’t see that on the menu. So anyway, about that hair I want to split Maybe we were unlucky and caught the kitchen unawares. Maybe in their keenness not to disappoint us they wanted to offer our party “choice, but not too much”. Maybe going Dutch isn’t so much about “splitting the bill” as it is “splitting the order” nowadays. So Lio, next time, offer parties of ten guests a set menu with 3 or 4 starters, mains, and desserts. It will save you the stress, and it will save us the embarrassment of having to negotiate with each other what we are ‘allowed’ to choose. Everything else about your restaurant was perfect.
