We absolutely love the food and service here. Today we learned about Malaki, the inspirational owner, who is incredibly smart and generous. Show some support in whichever way you can!

This is a perfectly acceptable food and drink shop conveniently located on the triangle, staffed by a hardworking family. I though the food was 'fine': others obviously have strong views either way but I thought it was perfectly ok. I then found out this shop had a highly polarised online presence, and this is where things seem to have got out of control. In between the gushing news articles, and some visceral local anger and suspicion, there's a really mundane story: - the guy has a 'legal services' firm who rents the building, he's not a lawyer but seems to be an immigration adviser. - the woman has a catering business, which I'm guessing is where the food comes from. - they've turned the reception of the legal firm into a shop selling a range of food and drink. This isn't a separate business per se and doesn't pay rent (the firm covers this) or wages (the family work for free on top of running their other businesses). - the purpose of the restaurant seems to be to raise money to send their son (who I'm not naming here, he's already far too over-exposed as it is) to a very expensive school. It's an elaborate roundabout way of doing what lots of aspirational parents do: work hard in a second job so they can send their child to independent school. No problem, perfectly normal. - they also talk about charity work and raising money to give musical instruments to poor children. I can't find any record of what they've given to whom, but loads of shops have charity jars at the till and I don't know where that money goes either: again, no reason for any cynicism or concern here. - they get their son involved in the running of the business so that he can learn valuable business skills (in the holidays when he isn't at boarding school). This is again perfectly normal and will stand him in good stead - loads of hardworking kids contribute to family businesses in Crystal Palace every day. - where it gets a bit weird is that they've made the little boy 'viral' by casting him as some kind of entrepreneur, which doesn't quite fit the facts. They seem a sweet family and they seem to dote on their kid, and he'll benefit from all of the above, but calling him a kind of business prodigy given what's actually happening is a bit weird. There's nothing dodgy about the business, but saying that a child has created businesses in primary school when he's not paying any costs or wages or doing most of the work isn't a good look. Again, worth remembering that posh families do this all the time and noone bats an eyelid. I'm just getting very uneasy writing this in August 2026 after a couple of high-profile tragedies involving young people pushed into different kinds of celebrity by no-doubt-aspirational parents who didn't consider what happens to the kid when they're grown-up and the image they've created comes crashing down. I'm begging everyone involved - the cheerleaders and the cynics, to just leave the kid alone and let him do well in life (which I'm sure he will). Meanwhile, enjoy a tasty snack while getting your immigration advice. Food: 4 Service: 4 Atmosphere: 3
