Excellent food, passable looks. Not a lot to look at from the outside, but walk in, go to the counter, and order what looks good (skip the menu, use your eyes). Really good lunch with leftovers for a second meal for under $10/person and a party of five was in and out in under an hour (with a relaxed atmosphere, no rush). Some bumbling from servers changing out mid-meal, but nothing to worry about.

My wife and I went to Maria's for dinner on Tuesday evening at the recommendation of a friend. The service was slow, especially since most of the food had already been prepared and was waiting in the steam table. The kids taking our order didn't seem to know what was going on, although they were friendly and polite. The "$5 dinner special" was explained to us, and seemed like a great value, so we ordered the stewed chicken with rice and beans. When I asked for the seasoned rice, the young man who was serving told us that some of the seasoned rice was crunchy, as it had dried out from sitting on the steam table too long. He said they mixed in some fresh rice, and I wondered why they would do that as rice is not a high-cost item for any restaurant. We opted for the plain white rice, since the chicken was stewed and saucy. We also ordered a Cuban sandwich for $5.95 plus $1.50 for fries and a drink, again, seemingly a great value.The young lady who rang us up, did so at menu price for the stewed chicken, rice, and beans, which was $5.95 instead of the $5 we were expecting. When she gave me the total, it sounded high, so I asked about it. She voided the ticket, and rang the food in again the very same way. At this point, I gave up trying to explain to her how the total shouldn't have been what she was telling me it was. She just wasn't getting it, and neither was the young man who had served us. After all, it was only a dollar, and still a good value for the food, which had us salivating by this point.We took our food to go, and drove to a nearby park to eat. When we broke open the foil container with the Cuban sandwich, there were no fries! The food was all very tasty, and we were glad that we had plenty of sauce from the stewed chicken, as the rice was a little dry and starting to get crunchy.Bottom line, excellent food, decent decor, but service that lacked in speed and general knowledge on running the restaurant. And they missed our fries, after selling us on the combo! We'll probably go back, but never if we're in such a hurry that we can't check our order.
