When it comes to browsing Yelp for dynamite dining options, my most important rule of thumb is this: Do not, as a blanket approach, simply disregard any places with 3.5-star ratings (or lower). Sure, there are times when you need to find fantastic food lickety-split, and in those situations, it makes sense to ignore anything under 4 stars. But if you always set a 4-star bar, you'll miss out on some truly magnificent meals. I think most longtime Yelpers are aware of this and can instantly think of 3.5-star spots that seem inexplicably underrated. For me, Mercado Little Spain is among the first such spots that springs to mind. I've been coming to MLS regularly since it opened (usually because my wife is utterly obsessed with the gazpacho), and it's had 3.5 stars pretty much the entire time. I've skimmed the unfavorable reviews, and one of the most common themes is that reviews often are not for the market as a whole. Rather, they are solely for one of the restaurants attached to the market (e.g., Lena, Mar or Spanish Diner), even though each restaurant has its own Yelp page. Other grievance-laden reviews are directed solely at one kiosk within the market; this sort of focus is arguably fair, but it's inarguably superficial, akin to reviewing a grocery store based on nothing but the deli counter. Finally, some people have complained about struggling to find a table/seat; this can certainly be an issue, but imo a bustling food hall is far better than a largely deserted hall where half the kiosks are closed (a sad scene many of us have encountered amid NYC's oversupply of food halls). So, that's why I think the stingy stars for MLS are unwarranted. As for why I believe 5 stars are most definitely deserved, let's start with the simple fact that it's a stellar setting -- bright, stylish, spotlessly clean, easy to navigate and brimming with variety. The variety includes stations devoted to all the best-known Spanish savories and sweets. Savory stations offer patatas bravas, sandwiches, seafood, paella, jamon y queso, flatbreads, olive oil pies with fillings like tuna and spinach/cheese, and my personal favorite, the tortilla de patatas. Sweet stations offer everything from the inexpensive (e.g., freshly fried churros with hot chocolate) to the high-brow (e.g., slices of burnt Basque cheesecake and all manner of dainty tarts). And you'll find both savories and sweets in one corner of the market where there's a little grocery nook and a grab-and-go counter; this area is where I sometimes splurge on various jarred or tinned delicacies, as well as where I acquire my wife's gazpacho by the pint (or, more commonly, by the quart). I'd like to think that this review will help to bump up MLS' score closer to where it deserves to be. But for now, I hope it prompts anyone who's on the fence to stop in and remind themselves how great a 3.5-star spot can be.
