TL;DR - If it looks like you're going to get seated in the basement, find another place to eat. I've got no complaints about the service, first of all. Totally fine. The food was also fine. *Just* fine. The porcini ravioli, which get mentioned in these reviews a lot, were a bit above average, but nothing else was. If prices were lower, this might be ok, but they are most certainly not. $35 for cacio e pepe, which, as the server explained while discouraging us from ordering it (an answer to the question "what makes your cacio e pepe so special?"), is literally just noodles, black pepper, and parmesan is...well, just a tad on the high side. Now, the kicker. Imagine this conversation. A: Hey, do you want to go to an Italian place? B: Sure. Do they have chicken parm? A: Yeah, but it costs $36. B: Is it good? A: A bit worse than your local pizza takeout joint. B: Is the restaurant itself interesting? A: Well, the upstairs is a pretty standard modern North End spot, nothing special, but they do have floor-to-ceiling windows that they open up when it's warm. B: That sounds alright. Is that where we'll sit? A: Actually, no. We'll sit in the basement. B: Oh...so, does it have some kind of interesting old-school subterranean ambiance or something? A: Nope. It's more like a cheaply-finished basement in someone's small suburban house. B: What, is there like a poker table and a dart board next to some laundry machines? A: No, but you could easily imagine those things being there. And there *are* a whole lot of pictures of the owner of the restaurant with various celebrities. B: Oh, so all the celebrities who've eaten at the restaurant. A: Of course not! Just the owner standing next to celebrities in various places. B: Interesting. A: Also, the bathroom is right there, and the whole basement has a vague smell of urinal cake. B: Is there club music playing really loudly? A: Absolutely. You'll hear a weird EDM cover of "Mad World" at least 3 times. B: Well, count me in! Do you, like Person B, find all of that appealing? Then make a reservation immediately! If not, steer clear. Price per person: $70–80 Food: 3 Service: 4 Atmosphere: 1

My husband and I have eaten at Nicos in the north-end for over 5 years. Food has always been amazingly delicious! Love everything about Nicos. This February I had an unfortunate experience. I ordered the arugula salad for main meal with bread & oil. My husband had a very large plate of pasta with beautiful shrimp cooked to perfection with a meatball appetizer. Scrumptious! I immediately started having a reaction after eating my arugula salad and ended up in the emergency room. Food poisoning...arugula. I informed Nicos after my bad night ordeal and never heard back from. If I owned a restaurant I would want to know if any of my patrons had a bad experience. I respectfully informed them and I am really quite disappointed that they did not acknowledge this event at all. Doesn't sound right for them to be this way. Loved our first night out at Nico Ristorante! It was an intimate setting and the service was very good. Phil was beyond welcoming and even took time to chat with us sharing stories from his own mother's kitchen. The wait staff was observant and checked in frequently. The chef accommodated dietary needs easily. We will definitely recommend it to others. Food: 4 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 4
