I think some waiters at Nobu Polanco are engaged in some very questionable billing and using the language barrier as cover. We dined there last month and ordered practically the same things we order every time we go. They gave us an English menu so I had to order in English, but I still pointed to what I wanted to make sure we got it all correct since the waitress didn't speak English and we only speak broken Spanish. This time around, in addition to the regular rolls we get, we asked for an additional roll - a Rainbow Roll. Which of course is a very standard (U.S.) sushi roll, but she told us that it wasn't on the menu. Before we could choose another roll, the waitress quickly suggested that they could make us "their version" of a rainbow roll. We didn't ask what that meant, but we assumed it would be just a standard California roll with various toppings. No problem. A moment later, the waitress returned and brought us a plate of nigiri sushi. We asked what this was because it didn't resemble anything we ordered. (We only ordered two orders of yellowfin and bluefin sashimi - no nigiri) She said it was "special." We looked around and realized that we were some of the only patrons in the restaurant so we thought maybe they're just giving us a free plate since we're regulars? Felt odd. But, again, the waitress left very quickly so we had no idea what to do. We eventually ate it. Next, she brought out the plate we had ordered (tuna crunch roll, spicy tuna roll, 2 orders of sashimi) and there was an extra roll on there we didn't recognize. We thought maybe this was finally the Rainbow roll substitute because it had several types of fish inside (instead of on top) so we ate it. We were still hungry so we ordered one additional order of sashimi. So, in total, we ordered 3 standard rolls and 3 sashimis (3 pieces each) And a total of four standard beers. The bill came. Normally for two of us, the bill is around $120 with tip (with one of us drinking) This time, there were three of us, so we expected around $150-180. The bill was well over $400. We went over the bill and realized that there were FOUR items on there that we hadn't ordered. The Rainbow Roll "substitution" the waitress brought us was actually an assortment of the most expensive items on their menu: A Wagyu Beef roll, some sort of truffle roll, and a Foie Gras roll. And then they also gave us their house roll on our regular plate (even though we hadn't ordered that either) These items were insanely expensive and we never ordered them. We complained to the waitress and the manager and both refused to remove the items from the bill. They just offered that we come in the next day for a discounted lunch. Our friend who was with us is a local and speaks Spanish - and he said that the waitress kept saying we ordered these things. But we did not. She was being dishonest and when she realized that our friend spoke Spanish, she got very quiet suddenly. It's completely insane that they would substitute a $200 set of rolls for a $30 Rainbow roll. She knew exactly what she was doing. We definitely won't be going back there. And I'm disappointed that the manager wouldn't take a stand against the waitresses actions. We don't have the waitress's name because the manager took our receipt and never gave it back to us. I'd say avoid this place - it's definitely for tourists (which is fine) but it's not up to par with Nobu in Malibu or other locations. And there's better sushi for better prices all over CDMX. And you'll get more honest service EVERYWHERE in town. Service: Dine in Meal type: Dinner Price per person: $1–100 Food: 3 Service: 1 Atmosphere: 3
