Right, here we are at Noodle Box in Mornington, a little nook of Southeast Asian promise tucked amidst the coastal charm of Victoria. Now, I’ve had my fair share of wok-tossed wonders from Bangkok to Bristol, so I sauntered in with a glint in my eye and a rumble in my belly, ready to see if this place could deliver a proper culinary wallop. Spoiler alert, my friends it did and I left stuffed to the gills, grinning like a man who’s just found a perfectly aged bottle of Bordeaux in a bargain bin. Let’s set the scene: it’s a bustling lunch, the kind where Mornington’s main drag hums with life, and Noodle Box is a hive of activity. The air’s thick with the sizzle of woks and that unmistakable wok-char aroma, you know, that smoky, caramelised kiss that tells you someone’s cooking with gusto. I plonk myself down at a table, having ordered at the counter it’s a veritable treasure map of Asian delights all beckoning like sirens. I opt for the beef teriyaki with thick hokkien noodles and a side of their crispy chicken with sweet sticky sauce, because, well, why not live a little? The service? Spot on. The staff, darting about like busy bees, still manage a smile, which is more than you can say for some fancy joints I’ve graced. My order arrives piping hot, vibrant and heaped in those iconic cardboard boxes that scream takeaway but somehow feel right at home here. The food is a triumph, tender strips of beef, glossy with a sauce that’s sweet, savoury and just punchy enough to keep things interesting. The noodles, fat and chewy, cling to every drop of that glorious sauce, with crisp veggies, bok choy, bean shoots, a bit of capsicum, adding crunch and colour. The crispy chicken? Golden, crunchy and dripping with a sticky glaze that’s so moreish I nearly ordered another round. Now, I’m not saying it’s haute cuisine this isn’t some Michelin-starred temple of gastronomy, but that’s the charm, isn’t it? It’s honest, hearty and packed with flavour, like a good mate who always delivers a cracking story. The portions are generous enough to leave you loosening your belt and I waddled out, full as a tick, with that warm glow you get from a meal that hits all the right spots. The price? shrugs Fair as you like—around $20 for a feast that’d keep a sailor happy for days. Noodle Box Mornington, you’ve won me over. It’s not perfect the décor’s a bit functional and the place can get a tad noisy when it’s packed, but for a rollicking good feed that leaves you sated and smiling, it’s hard to beat.
