I visit this pub almost every day. Make of that what you will about either the pub or my life choices. I bring my dogs, Alfie and Noodle, who are greeted with considerably more enthusiasm than I am. This is fine. They deserve it. The Old Chestnut in the past was not in the best of places due to sad personal circumstances of the previous custodians before Julie arrived. She worked through what I can only assume was sheer bloody-mindedness and an alarming tolerance for long hours. Three years of 24/7 graft later, she'd turned it into exactly the kind of local that exemplifies community — proper atmosphere, proper regulars, the sort of place where someone always knows your name (and your dogs' names, and what you're drinking, and probably your postcode) but is welcoming of others. Julie has since handed the reins to the brewery — presumably after someone pointed out that running a pub around the clock while managing other businesses and a family is not, in fact, sustainable - sensible decision. The brewery, to their credit, have had the good sense to keep the same staff and leave well alone. The atmosphere remains intact. Alfie and Noodle remain welcome. If you're looking for a decent local with actual soul and a genuine welcome — whether you've got two legs or four — the Old Chestnut is well worth a visit. I'll be there tomorrow.
