I love to watch the little robot bringing the food to the tables. Fast and friendly service, menu options are very customizable. I am unable to eat gluten and dairy. I went to Onion Restaurant & Tea House because it was recommended as a celiac friendly place to eat. It took quite some time to get seated. There were only two people working out front and three in the whole building. The waitress was very kind but I didn't think she understood what gluten meant. When I ordered my food she said we can make anything gluten-free. I was concerned that there was a language barrier and I did not want to get sick. So, I asked the other waitress. She said that they could in fact make anything gluten-free. Concerned that they did not understand, I asked, what about a few menu items that I didn't think could be made gluten-free. The waitress explained that they couldn't make those things gluten-free. At this point I was a bit concerned but I went ahead and ordered the Lo-Mein. I told our waitress that I needed it to be gluten-free. She said that they could definitely make the dish gluten-free. When it came out it had regular noodles on it. I asked the waitress about it. She kept saying that the dish was made gluten-free. I asked her if they used gluten-free noodles. She said that the noodles were regular noodles and did not contain gluten. I just had to be sure. Eating gluten makes me very sick. So I asked her if she knew what was in the noodles. She said she had to go ask the chef. He explained that he used gluten-free soy sauce. I asked if the noddles were gluten free. He looked confused and repeated that the sauce was. This cycle continued until I explained what gluten was. Then they said that the noodles had wheat in them. The chef asked me what I wanted in replacement of the noodles and I asked if they had rice noodles. He said yes and remade the dish. The dishes came out on plastic cafeteria trays! We never received refills on our drinks. The waitress never came back to our table at all, not even to give us our bill. We had to walk upfront to the other waitress and asked to pay. What infuriates me is I could have gotten very sick. I don't think people should say that they can make anything gluten-free if they don't know what gluten is. The service was horrible and it took us forever to get out of there. It is so embarrassing having to have this happen on a regular basis. I don't expect everyone to know what gluten is but if you are in the food industry I think you should. I'm thankful I did not get sick and was not hospitalized. I will never return to this restaurant!
