Enough experience will tell you that the best places are not always necessarily in the places perceived from the outside. This is a case. That one weekend, the two of us found ourselves in the Inala Civic Center, to me a pretty new part of town. It is not much as a whole the shopping mall, but walk outside the right entrance and there is a sight to behold - this may well be called little Saigon here. There are all sorts of coffee shops, cheap fruit places, noodle bars and bubble tea places - more than you could poke a stick at. Best of all, no matter where you choose you could get a decent bite of most sizes for practically pocket money. How this is not more well known, I will not know.
Biding some time, as there was no real rush at the moment, my dining buddy and I looked around the place and you could say there was a lot of salivation. One place he had heard of from a Google search was this place called "Oops" - and the first order of business was getting a drink from there.
Unlike many other drinks places that I have been to, or walked by, this for once actually has a great and appropriate aesthetic to it. It is clean, the rainbow of fresh produce in the front cabinet gleams with bright colours and freshness that you can simply see from a look alone. Not even in any fruit shop has something so healthy and good-looking been like this with fruit. In addition to all those ready to blend plants, the whole place is bright, has enough bright colours to look cheerful without being cutesy and it has numerous slick machines. Juice bars normally look too bland, grimy or whatnot - but this is something else entirely.
With the service, it is adequate. It need not be anything else, but the girl behind the counter was friendly enough and it is pretty quick. So check mark for what it needs to do and moving on.
Whatever you want to wet your whistle (that is non-alcoholic mind you)should be here at Oops, plus a few other treats here and there. In the front cabinet are all sorts of fresh fruits and vegetables ready to be squeezed into fresh juices, or there are milkshakes, or bubble tea with all kinds of distinct flavours and toppings, or perhaps it is some frozen yoghurt as a snack. Bahn mis and other street foods are there as well to have as a brief snack.
That's exactly what occurred here. The primary reason was for a bubble tea, and more than was bargained for came of it. The flavour that I got was pomegranate, and the base was pearls. This was a fair bit different to most other bubble teas around; a whole lot of ice was used, plus they used actual fresh fruits to make the drink. This gave it a better flavour, one that was far less sweet but actually tasted of pomegranate and it was ice cold. Additionally, they went pretty generous with the tapioca bubbles. Overall, satisfactory.
In addition to that, the dining buddy had noted some pastries in the hot box called "pateso pate chaud". These were some minced chicken pastries, and they were tasty. For a five, three could be gotten and even a single one would work well as a snack. They are fairly big, and the amount of chicken filling was generous and it was nicely spiced. Throughout the mixture was some vegetables, plus having a glistening and crispy filo pastry shell worked out well for it.
Going back a bit later, my dining buddy grabbed a couple of banana fritters. On the counter, he had noted these crumbed looking sticks and wondered if they were fish or something (...hey, the looked exactly like a fishstick - so I don't blame him) but was told what they were. To finish off a trip out here, this was a good and sweet end. The banana was really sweet - almost like a sugar banana or plantain, definitely not a regular banana that can be gotten from the store. That is about it really for the banana, it was sweet and had a good creamy texture. Something sweet was needed to finish it off, and this did the perfect job.
Even getting onto Google, this is one place that has barely any recognition and it absolutely deserves better on its part. Hopefully, this is not the only review for ages because even beyond the platitudes of my well-wishes, I can actually detect some sort of appeal that could get it more recognition, more clientele and possibly some return visits to here. In fact, take this as an endorsement of Brisbane's Little Saigon as a whole.
