Unfortunately one of the most disappointing restaurant experiences I have had. I generally take all the low-rated reviews with a grain of salt when most of them seem to be five stars, but in this case those low reviews turned out to be very accurate. TL;DR: I sadly would not recommend this place to anybody To start with the pros, I will say the staff was very nice and the service was great. Our server was attentive, and understanding of our feelings of a food dish and offered to remove it from our bill. That was very appreciated. The decor - at first glance, the place seems to have a cool vibe with the pink flowers and paper cranes hanging everywhere. However once you sit down and really take everything in, you notice the wooden chopsticks in paper, the cheap chairs and tables, and some features around that just didn’t make sense: two large TVs in our seating area (they were off), a projector screen on the ceiling with no projector pointing at it, and an open laptop in the corner obviously playing the music (usually that kind of thing is out of sight). It seemed the place was quickly and cheaply thrown together. The drinks - we ordered two cocktails, one with tequila and one with whisky. The flavors were really nothing special, sort of diluted, and did not taste fresh. I make a much better whisky sour at home without much effort, and I expected a lot more from a place trying to come across as a “speakeasy”. Due to the price, it really didn’t seem worth ordering any more drinks after that. Food - To start we ordered the tuna tartare. It had a really nice presentation, piled up inside an avocado slice bowl of sorts, topped with a quail egg. The tuna was unfortunately pretty dry and not tender like much other raw tuna I’ve had in the past. The flavors were really lacking - all you got was just tuna, and just avocado. The quail egg yolk provided moisture and a touch of flavor to a few pieces of tuna, but overall really disappointing. This dish was $20. We came hungry for this meal, so we ate it. Sushi roll - gold something. This was also really lacking. The snow crab and white tuna were dry as well, and the sushi rice was not up to par. It was a large piece that took me a couple minutes to chew due to the lack of moisture. We really got the impression that it was all ingredients from the sushi place upstairs from the day before that they put in the fridge to save for the next day. We have both had much more fresh and tasty grocery store sushi than this unfortunate $21 roll. I was able to eat a few pieces while my partner finished the rest, again because we came hungry and expected better. Yoogashi - this pastry sounded great in the description. I love a flaky, savory pastry and was really looking forward to this, though began to get worried after the previous two dishes. When it came to the table, the presentation was disappointing. It lacked structure, which was even more evident when we cut into it. All but the very top, the pastry layers were mushed together and felt raw and chewy, while the vegetables inside were inconsistent in how much they had been cooked, though overall it felt overdone. The sauce inside is akin to a pot pie you find in the freezer section, but honestly I would have been much happier to eat one of those than this. This item cost $25. I couldn’t even eat half of the quarter slice I took, and we sat in sadness waiting for the server to come back. As mentioned before, she was very kind asking if we wanted a box, and when we declined, she asked if we had liked it. I explained how I had really expected something better, especially given the prices for everything at the restaurant. I worked as a server for several years in my twenties, and I know this obviously has nothing to do with them, but I feel bad for the servers who have to represent this food and drink. We later found out from other reviews that it seems there must be some sort of tik tok or influencer thing going on bringing people here, and I do find myself very confused as to how people rated the food and drink so highly. The service was incredibly slow - it took 20 minutes after we were seated for someone to come take our drink order. Similarly at the end of the meal, we sat with dirty plates for 15-20 minutes before our server came to deliver the check. We ordered the tuna tartar, chicken karaage, Dragon Breath roll, Golden Roll, and Kinoko Scallops. All of the food was really bland, and didn’t leave you wanting more. The chicken was cold and the rice in the sushi was either old or improperly prepared. The staff seemed much more focused on the private room tables while the main dining area languished with minimal attention. The cocktails werefinebut we can easily make better ones at home. Based on our experience, I don’t think this restaurant expects repeat customers. Time and energy seem focused on social media marketing, not on food or service quality. Swing by if you want to snap a few wannabe influencer pics for your feed. Otherwise, spend your hard earned money at one of the many other restaurants in this neighborhood that prioritize customer experience and delicious food. Overall super mid. Generous 2/5 stars. We’ve been so excited to check out Origami Den and finally made it out! To say our expectations were exceeded is an understatement. From the minute we walked in, we knew we were somewhere special. The food, the service, and the vibe were impeccable! We enjoyed every bite & sip and will definitely be back! Price per person: $90–100 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5 Dietary restrictions: We dined next to a pair who were gluten and dairy free and they had no difficulty having their dietary needs met!
