Great stuff. Came here with 4 other girlfriends for dinner tonight to celebrate our 10-year high school reunion. Pausa was the perfect spot. We even stayed 30 minutes after closing (we're assholes, we know) and the staff let us chat without rushing us out. We loved the food, the ambiance, the service, and our friendly waiter who came to check up on us often as well as provide sincere recommendations on the menu when we were being indecisive. There's a lot of pride and heart in this restaurant, and you can feel it. To start, we ordered the 3 cheese and 3 meat plate. If you love charcuterie, this is a must-get. There are a variety of cheeses and meats to choose from, and the boards also come with generous helpings of toasted bread, truffle honey, pickled cauliflower, etc. If you don't know what to get, your waiter will help you. They also try to make everything in-house, so even pasta, breads, some of the meats are cured here. To share for appetizers, we ordered the Burrata and the Bone marrow. Just a heads-up, the burrata is served over a chilled tomato puree with a couple anchovies on top, and the plate is teeny tiny. However the quality of cheese here is fantastic, so you won't be disappointed. Bone marrow was good - mildly sweet, but quite fishy because it was topped with blue fin tuna heart, which was browned and melted into the marrow. For pizza we decided on a classic Margherita, which was just heavenly. Shareable and comes fully whole with a pair of scissors for you to cut out your own slice as big or small as you want. Cheese, again, which is awesome here - is thick and creamy, sauce is tangy and flavorful. The bread was that perfect combination of doughy and chewy yet crisp and delicate on the outside, and tasted interesting and robust on its own. I ended up sliding it across my plate to pick up the extra bone marrow. For our entree we decided on the Petrale Sole (fish) and the Squash for our vegetable. The sole I highly recommend - it's separated into pieces already for your table to share, and is served on top of a fun blend of swiss chard, beets, and what looked like watermelon radish. The squash was interesting, cut in half and intact, topped with pomegranate, grated goat cheese, and an almost Asian-tasting smoky bok choy. It was good, but I kind of wish we got the Broccolini instead. For our pasta, we ended up going with one called Mafaldine d'oro Primitiva - which I actually recommend skipping. On paper it sounded good - beef cheek and tripe sugo, leeks, parsnip, celery root, pecorino romano, but the dish was the least memorable out of everything we ordered. Maybe it wasn't hot enough, but the sauce turned out pretty starchy and bland. My friends and I practically licked our plates clean for everything else, but this dish was left only somewhat devoured. We brought our own wine, so I can't speak to the cocktail menu. Otherwise, great place for a date or a dinner with friends. Between 5 people who ordered a ton, the bill was about $250.
This place is perfection from entry to exit. The ambiance is warm and sleek without being too stuffy. The service is phenomenal; a perfect balance of attentiveness to detail without being overbearing. All servers and bartenders veg knowledgeable about the food and wine menu. The charcuterie is made in house and PHENOMENAL. Cocktails are delicious. Pork belly is out of this world. And the truffle chocolate for dessert was perfection. This is the best Italian place on the peninsula that I've been to, hands down.
Superb and outstanding. It was my husbands 50th birthday and he wanted to keep it low key with only a few friends and not deal with the city and wanted to stay local. As you know finding this type of chef table with this type of cuisine in SM is hard. We re so glad that Pausa decided to open their baby here. I had heard that Pausa had a chef table experience so I booked it. Let me tell you I am so glad I did. From the time we arrived to the time we rolled our bodies out of the restaurant everything was top notch. The food was light and favorable. Each pairing of wine complemented the food to a T. The service was out of this world and Chef Giuliani was a gem. He explained everything and made sure we were always taken care of. If you want an intimate yet super amazing experience in the middle of San Mateo this is the place.
