Scruffy's, or Scruffy's Drive Up, as this place is indeed now called, is a great little find in the middle of nowhere. We had a couple of nicely prepared, tasty mushroom & Swiss burgers, sweet potato waffle fries, and good, thick vanilla and strawberry shakes. The place is clean, the folks are friendly, the food is straightforward and good. You want more? Keep driving. But you're going to be on the road for quite awhile.
After driving for several hours and watching the vast prairie nothingness and your gas gauge headed toward E, the tiny town of Hettinger is a welcome oasis. This booming metropolis has a gas station to fuel your car and a delightful little shack called Scruffy's to fuel passing through travelers. Offerings include pizza, burgers, sandwiches, salads, sides, ice cream, malts, and shakes. Similar to a Dairy Queen or even a Burger King or Wendy's from a simpler time, the food is fresh and affordable. The staff are friendly and efficient. There are no frills- everything is priced separately-burger, fries, and a drink will run you about 10 bucks. But, you will leave full. A great place to sate your appetite on a long journey.
