Food was good but it took over 30 minutes to get my drink. There were only 2 people in front of me and when I left one of the was still waiting. Food: 4 Service: 1

ZERO STARS!!! I hate that I even have to write this, but this is now the second time in two weeks I’ve experienced something like this at coffee shops in the Wilmington area. The first time was at Starbucks. This time it was at Port City Java. I walked in during the morning and ordered one drink, a large mocha shake, and paid $9.07 in cash. It was a simple order. After I placed my order, six more customers came in behind me. They ordered a mix of drinks including hot coffee, iced drinks, blended drinks, along with food. Some of them even placed multiple drink orders in a single transaction. Every single one of those six customers received their orders before me. I ordered first and only had one drink, yet I was served last. I stood there watching this happen in real time as each person who came after me got their drinks and food while I was still waiting. After a while, I finally went up and asked about my order. The response I got was “Oh my gosh, I’m sorry, I forgot to give it to you, here it is.” What’s frustrating is that this is the exact same excuse I was given at Starbucks during a similar experience just days ago. At this point, that explanation does not feel genuine. It feels like a pattern. So I am left to draw my own conclusion. I was the only Black person in the store, I ordered first, and I was served last after multiple customers who ordered more complicated items. That is not just poor service. That raises serious concerns about how customers are being treated and prioritized. What makes it even more troubling is that if I had not spoken up, I would likely have continued standing there, completely overlooked. That is unacceptable. I have lived in North Carolina for over 15 years, spending most of my time in Greensboro, and I have never experienced anything like this. But in just one month of being in Wilmington for work, I have now experienced this twice at two different coffee chains. That says something. At this point, I am questioning where I spend my money, because no one should feel ignored, overlooked, or treated as less than, especially when they are a paying customer. If you are Black and in the Wilmington area, I would encourage you to be mindful of where you go. If there are any Black owned coffee shops in the area, please point me in that direction.
