The starters and main courses we got (steak tartare, cheese soufflé, and the beef chateaubriand) were great and they had incredible flavour profiles that blended each ingredient exceptionally. The desserts were extremely lacking. The dark chocolate mousse only had a hint of dark chocolate and the peppers inside felt forced and weren’t fresh, I could see this being a frozen and defrosted dessert. The cheese cake was good but the base was akin to a graham cracker or digestive. The atmosphere was nice, the house is cool and if you are into history this is a nice place to visit. There was even a cat roaming around which was a nice little surprise. The service was absolutely abysmal and for us bordered on being rude enough to make a complaint. Maybe a few of the servers were having a bad day or the restaurant was exceptionally busy but we were treated terribly. From the second we sat down we felt like they wanted us out of the restaurant. I feel more welcomed at my local chippy or Tesco Cafe. Being treated like you shouldn’t be in a restaurant or are being rushed out from the minute you sit down leads individuals to think they are being judged for who they are, their accent or what they are wearing as there are no other metrics to judge an individual so early in an interaction. It’s important to note that we weren’t asking for an arm and a leg of the server either. The requests we had are things you would ask at your normal local restaurant like “can we have some bread please” which were all met with impatience like a sleep deprived parent reluctantly giving their toddler candy. That being said no complaint was made as we gave the individuals the benefit of the doubt and wouldn’t want to affect their livelihood. Only go here if money is absolutely no object and you need to visit this historic place, otherwise I would go to one of the other hundred restaurants with the same and better quality of food and desserts in Scotland. Not to mention the far better and consistent service that would blow Rhubarb out of the water. For the prices Rhubarb charges they need to have consistent service that meets the bare minimum of acceptable human interaction and their desserts need to be reevaluated. I came here for my 18th Birthday and had a wonderful time. We had the 6 course tasting menu and the staff easily accommodated my dietary requirements. They even called a couple days before to check the menu would be ok. They made a custom drink to accommodate my dietary requirements and just overall made the day feel special. Meal type: Dinner Price per person: £100+ Recommendation for vegetarians: Somewhat recommend Vegetarian offerings: Vegetarian menu or section Dietary restrictions: They easily accommodated dietary restrictions

Rhubarb at Prestonfield House Hotel is an elegant and extravagant venue, and it cannot be faulted on presentation - it is simply stunning. They have peacocks roaming the grounds, sumptuous cushions scattered absolutely everywhere, and heavy fabric curtains adorn every room, even the bathrooms! Service is generally good and the staff are attentive. We had the champagne afternoon tea for six, which was good quality overall, except the bread used for sandwiches was a little stale at the ends, which you don't expect given the prices you're paying.However I only feel able to give Rubhard three stars, for a couple of reasons. Firstly, we booked the table for 12pm and arrived just after 12.10pm, and the table wasn't ready for us. Not really a big deal, I know, but in a place which otherwise offers such impeccable service, it was a little surprising that we had to wait in the reception area. The main issue was when we were directed to use the back entrance because one of our group was on a wheelchair and only the back entrance had a lift. That was fine, so we walked right around the building and waited at the back door. The staff member told us he would be there, waiting for us, to let us in. He was not there and the door was locked and closed. I had wait 5-10 minutes, then eventually called someone inside the resturant to ask a staff member to come down and let us in, which they did, with apologies to be fair. It was frustrating and not suggestive of the extremely high standards of service and throughtfulness that can usually be expected of this venue.I recognise that the issues I had during my visit are very specific to me and not likely to be repeated, so although I only feel able to rate it as 3 stars, I'm sure that for many other people this will understandably be a consistent 5 star venue.
