My wife and I were spending the day in Inverness during our cruise and came across the River Grill. We decided to stop in for lunch, because apparently we had not suffered enough that morning. We walked in around 11:00 a.m. and asked if they were open. The bartender replied, “Yes, yes,” then pointed toward a table and said, “Sit, sit,” with the warmth and enthusiasm of a prison guard assigning bunks. Menus were brought over by a waiter who never introduced himself, smiled, or gave any indication that our presence had improved his day. Mind you, we were the only table in the restaurant. Since we never got his name, we will simply refer to him as Captain Hospitality. Captain Hospitality approached the table and opened with, “You order.” No “hello.” No “welcome.” No “how are you?” Just “You order,” delivered with the charm of a man taking lunch selections during a police lineup. We ordered two Coke Zeros. He asked whether we wanted ice. We said yes, and his reaction suggested we had requested hand-cut cubes from a glacier, individually polished and blessed by the King. My wife ordered the fish and chips, while I ordered the beef burger with cheese. I attempted to ask for the burger well done, but Captain Hospitality walked away mid-sentence. Apparently, customer preferences are more of a loose suggestion at the River Grill. While waiting for the food, I visited the restroom. It was not the worst restroom I have ever seen, but I work around construction sites, and I have encountered portable toilets with better lighting, fresher air, and a stronger overall commitment to luxury. Then the food arrived. My cheeseburger consisted of a frozen patty approximately one-eighth of an inch thick, topped with a piece of cheese so small it may have been applied with tweezers. I have seen more cheese stuck to the wrapper of a fast-food burger. The patty looked like someone had taken a normal burger, shown it a hydraulic press, and said, “Make it sadder.” My wife’s fish was heavily breaded, clearly frozen, and had all the delicate freshness of something recently excavated from the bottom of a supermarket freezer. Long John Silver’s serves better premade fish, and they at least have the honesty to serve it in a cardboard box beneath fluorescent lighting. The fries were fine, which was impressive because “fine” was the highest achievement reached by anything in the building. When we were ready to leave, getting the check became an interactive escape-room challenge. I tried repeatedly to flag down Captain Hospitality while he walked directly past us as though we had become invisible. Another employee finally noticed and alerted him that we were trying to pay. Imagine having customers actively attempting to give you money and still treating it like an unreasonable inconvenience. The total came to around £40. For £40, you can find an excellent meal elsewhere in Inverness—possibly one involving fresh ingredients, friendly service, visible amounts of cheese, and ice that does not trigger an international incident. Overall, the food was mediocre at best, the service was bizarrely hostile, and the entire experience felt like we had accidentally interrupted a private meeting instead of entering a public restaurant. Do yourself a favor and keep walking. Inverness has far better places to spend your money, your appetite, and your limited time on shore. We do not recommend the River Grill, and we will absolutely not be back. I suspect the staff will be relieved.

After an absolutely awful experience at a restaurant across the road called Prime, Steak & Seafood, we arrived at River Grill feeling disappointed, frustrated, and still very hungry. From the moment we walked through the door, the difference was night and day. Despite arriving soaked from the pouring rain, the staff immediately welcomed us with genuine warmth, kindly taking our dripping wet coats and making us feel comfortable straight away. We were looked after from the very beginning, with our drinks order taken promptly and every member of staff treating us with professionalism and kindness. One of our guests requires a gluten-free diet, and the team couldn’t have been more accommodating. They took the time to explain the options and made us feel completely at ease. The food arrived incredibly quickly, the portions were far more generous than we expected, and every bite was outstanding. After the disappointment we’d experienced earlier that evening, this meal completely turned our night around. The service was flawless, the atmosphere was warm and welcoming, and it’s clear that everyone—from the front-of-house team to the chefs—takes real pride in what they do. A huge thank you to everyone at River Grill for rescuing what had started as a terrible evening. You reminded us exactly what great hospitality should look like. We left with full stomachs, smiles on our faces, and a restaurant we’ll happily return to and recommend to anyone. Five stars without hesitation. Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5

Nice location. The food was okay. We had the chicken soup, which is cream based. The soup can use more flavor. We also had the penne chicken. Adding garlic would help this dish. It lack flavor and the chicken was tough. Pasta was good. Meal type: Lunch Price per person: £20–30 Food: 2 Service: 2 Atmosphere: 2
